🌱 Morphology
Small perennial succulent that forms compact cushions. It has a small, short, branched woody stem that may be raised above the ground. Each pair consists of very unequal leaves: the larger one, cylindrical-ovoid, reaches about 3 cm, while the smaller one is semi-lunar and approximately one-third its length. The entire surface is covered in fine, silvery-white hairs, which give it its characteristic whitish-grey appearance.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
Endemic to South Africa, Western Cape, from Barrydale to Ladismith, in the Little Karoo. It grows on plains covered with small fragments of white quartz, where its silvery coloration aids in camouflage. It belongs to the Aizoaceae family.
❄️ Temperature
USDA Zone 9a–11. Tolerates minimum temperatures down to −7 ºC for short periods, provided the substrate is completely dry.
☀️ Lighting
Requires very intense lighting, with a target of over 20 mol/m²/day of DLI PAR during growth. Direct sunlight encourages compactness and maintains the silvery coloration.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Summer dormancy. This is a primarily winter-growing species. During autumn, winter, and spring, it is recommended to water abundantly and allow the substrate to dry completely before the next watering. In summer, it should be kept almost dry, providing water only if it begins to show clear signs of dehydration.
🌸 Flowering
Solitary flowers ranging from pale pink to deep magenta, up to 1.5 cm in diameter. It flowers from June to August in South Africa, approximately from December to February in Madrid.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, a fertilizer with a high content of assimilable calcium and potassium is recommended, such as Desert CHOICE® Aizoáceas, applied during watering and avoiding excessive nitrogen inputs.
This is an inimitable xerophyte grown in Madrid in a technological square pot with substrate activated by mycorrhizal fungi.
7 × 7 cm gourmet black pot.
