Gibbaeum petrense | Quartz carpet
ā¬10,60
š± Morphology
Small perennial, caespitose, mat-forming succulent that forms clumps about 5 cm tall and can reach 10 cm or more in diameter. It features numerous small bodies with pairs of fleshy, smooth, triangular leaves that are grayish-green in color, with markedly angular edges. Over time, these groups can become true compact carpets with a stony appearance.
š Distribution, habitat, and family
Endemic to South Africa, in the Western Cape province, where it is located on the northern slopes of the Langeberg in the Little Karoo. It grows on clayey slopes with white quartz outcrops in very stony, well-drained environments. It belongs to the Aizoaceae family. Its distribution is extremely limited and it is listed as Vulnerable (VU) primarily due to habitat loss and degradation.
āļø Temperature
USDA Zone 9aā11. It tolerates minimum temperatures down to ā7 ĀŗC for short periods, provided the substrate is completely dry.
āļø Lighting
During active growth, it requires very high light levels, with a target of over 20 mol/m²/day of DLI PAR. In summer, when temperatures are high, it benefits from protection against the most intense sun and excellent ventilation.
š§ Growth cycle and watering
Summer dormancy. It is primarily a winter-growing species, with most activity during autumn, winter, and spring. During active growth, water abundantly, allowing the substrate to dry out completely in between. In summer, water intake should be significantly reduced, although this species may maintain some activity and does not require a drought period as strict as other Gibbaeum species.
šø Flowering
Solitary flowers, large relative to the size of the plant, pink to purplish-red in color, similar to small daisies and up to about 2 cm in diameter. Flowering occurs mainly in spring in the Southern Hemisphere, approximately SeptemberāNovember in Madrid.
šæ Nutrition
During the active growth period, a fertilizer with a high content of assimilable calcium and potassium, such as Desert CHOICEĀ® Aizoaceae, is recommended, applied during watering and avoiding excessive nitrogen input.
