🌱 Morphology
Small perennial, compact, and cespitose succulent that can form clusters up to about 30 cm. The bodies are formed by pairs of very fleshy, globose, and smooth leaves, green to whitish-green in color, closely joined with a well-marked fissure. During the dry season, they dehydrate and partially sink into the ground; old leaves remain around the stems, protecting the new shoots. It develops a long root.

🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
Endemic to the Little Karoo, Western Cape, South Africa, from Swellendam, Montagu, and Ladismith. It grows among quartz outcrops and gravel, in a region with mainly winter rainfall. It belongs to the Aizoaceae family.

❄️ Temperature
USDA Zone 9a–11. Tolerates minimum temperatures down to −7 ºC for short periods, provided the substrate is completely dry.

☀️ Lighting
Requires very intense lighting, with a target of more than 20 mol/m²/day of DLI PAR during growth. In summer, it is advisable to protect it from the most intense sun and keep it cool and well-ventilated.

💧 Growth cycle and watering
Summer dormancy. Growth is concentrated mainly from autumn to spring. During the active period, abundant watering is recommended, allowing the substrate to dry out completely. In summer, watering should be greatly reduced, as excess moisture can cause rot.

🌸 Flowering
Solitary flowers, ranging from white to pink, mauve, or purple, which appear in late winter and early southern spring: approximately February–March in Madrid. They open during the day and close at night.

🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, a fertilizer with a high content of assimilable calcium and potassium is recommended, such as Desert CHOICE® Aizoaceae, applied during watering and avoiding excessive nitrogen inputs.

This is an inimitable Xerophyte grown in Madrid in a technological square pot and with the substrate activated with mycorrhizal fungi.
