Small, stemless succulent, compact and stone-like in appearance. The leaves appear in unequal pairs and are joined at the base, forming oblique-ovoid bodies about 6–12 × 6–8 cm. Its epidermis is whitish and covered with fine white hairs, a feature that aids its mimicry with the quartz pebbles among which it grows.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
A highly restricted endemic of the Western Cape, on the northern slopes of the Langeberg, near Muiskraal. It lives on shale and slopes or flat surfaces with abundant quartz pebbles. It belongs to the Aizoaceae family.
❄️ Temperature
USDA Zone 10–11. It tolerates minimum temperatures down to −1 ºC, keeping the substrate completely dry and especially avoiding the combination of cold and humidity.
☀️ Lighting
It needs very intense lighting, with a target of over 20 mol/m²/day of DLI PAR during growth. In protected cultivation, it can tolerate direct sun if acclimated progressively.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Summer dormancy. Growth is concentrated outside of summer. During the active period, it is recommended to water abundantly and allow the substrate to dry completely before repeating. In summer, watering should be kept to a minimum, avoiding moisture around the roots.
🌸 Flowering
Solitary flowers with white or pink petals, up to 2.5 cm in diameter. In the southern hemisphere, it flowers mainly in December, which corresponds approximately to June in Madrid.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, a fertilizer with a high content of assimilable calcium and potassium is recommended, such as Desert CHOICE® Aizoaceae, applied during watering and avoiding excessive nitrogen inputs.
This is an inimitable Xerophyte grown in Madrid in a high-tech square pot with the substrate activated with mycorrhizal fungi.
