Gasteria 'Sakura Fuji' | Silvery Gasteria
ā¬21,20
š±Ā Morphology
Ā Ā A small, compact, slow-growing collector's Gasteria, famous for its extraordinary marbled coloration. It forms very tight rosettes that slowly produce offsets and can eventually form small clumps. The leaves are thick, fleshy, and elongated, initially arranged in a fan shape and later opening up slightly; they can reach about 15 cm in length.
The most unique characteristic is the epidermis, where the green is interrupted by broad cream, pale yellow, and silver-gray areas, streaked with diffuse longitudinal striations and some blackish-green lines. With proper lighting, pinkish tones may also appear, which is where the reference to Sakura, the cherry blossom, comes from.
Commercial plants show some variability, and occasionally produce offsets with much greener coloration, interpreted by some growers as reversion. It is recommended to separate these offsets to preserve the cultivar's characteristic appearance.
š Distribution, habitat, and family
Family Asphodelaceae, tribe Alooideae, genus Gasteria. āSakura Fujiā is a horticultural cultivar of Japanese origin, and therefore has no natural distribution of its own. Its parentage is not reliably documented; Alsterworthia includes a historical description of the cultivar but does not attribute a breeder or parents.
āļø Temperature ā USDA 10a
It tolerates minimum temperatures down to ā1 ĀŗC. Due to its variegation and slow growth, special caution is recommended with prolonged cold, humidity, and poor ventilation.
āļø Lighting
Shadeāpartial shade, with abundant indirect or filtered light. Sufficient lighting helps keep the plant compact and encourages cream, grayish, and pink tones without subjecting areas with lower chlorophyll content to excessive radiation. Indicative DLI PAR: 10ā20 mol/m²/day.
š§ Growth cycle and watering
Opportunistic. It is recommended to water when the substrate is completely dry, allowing it to dry out again before the next watering. During warm months, the frequency can be reduced, and in winter, it is recommended to space it out even more, especially if temperatures are low. Some cultivation sources describe it as a Gasteria with preferential winter growth.
šø Flowering
The specific flowering of this cultivar is not sufficiently documented. Like other Gasteria, it develops an elevated inflorescence with tubular, drooping flowers, generally pink or reddish at the base and lighter with greenish striations towards the tip. No reliable information has been found to determine a specific age for the first flowering of āSakura Fujiā.
šæ Nutrition
During the active growth period, Desert CHOICEĀ® Aloes, Haworthias & Co. is recommended, with a high content of potassium and bioavailable calcium. It is applied with watering, reducing or suspending fertilization during the summer dormancy.
