🌱 Morphology
One of the largest and most architecturally imposing Gasterias. It is an acaulescent succulent with relatively slow growth, which can remain solitary or produce offsets from the base to form clumps. Adult plants can reach approximately 40 cm in height and up to 60 cm in diameter. Juvenile leaves appear in two opposite rows, but with age, they form an erect and compact rosette. They are thick, rigid, lanceolate, and triangular in cross-section, with a slightly concave upper surface and a marked keel on the underside. They can reach about 20–40 cm in length, with a smooth, grayish-green to dark green epidermis and small lighter spots. The margins and the keel feature a characteristic white, hard, and waxy band. With intense lighting or during water stress, the leaves can acquire violet tones.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
Family Asphodelaceae, tribe Alooideae, section Longiflorae, series Longifoliae.
It is native primarily to KwaZulu-Natal, from the vicinity of Durban southward, extending slightly into the Eastern Cape Province as far as the Mzimvubu River. It lives in a territory with a relatively humid climate, on rocky outcrops, slopes, and cliff faces, especially in coastal environments and dry river valleys. The habitat receives approximately 1,000–1,250 mm of annual rainfall, mainly during the warm months, although winter fronts can also provide precipitation. The climate is moderate and practically frost-free, with warm, humid summers.
❄️ Temperature — USDA 9a
It tolerates minimum temperatures of down to approximately −7 °C in cultivation according to horticultural data. However, its natural habitat is much milder and practically frost-free; therefore, this figure should be interpreted as a point of tolerance in cultivation and not as the habitual temperature of its natural environment.
☀️ Lighting
It prefers bright shade to partial shade. In the wild, it grows among rocks, under vegetation, and on protected walls, although adult plants can receive quite a bit of light. Approximately 10–20 mol/m²/day of DLI PAR is recommended, especially avoiding the intense and prolonged sun of the central hours in hot climates.
💧 Growth cycle and irrigation
Opportunistic. Its distribution is found in a region of predominantly summer rains, but with contributions during the winter as well. Therefore, it does not have a rigid seasonal dormancy. It is recommended to water when the substrate is completely dry, performing deep waterings during warm growth periods and reducing the frequency when temperatures drop. Good ventilation is especially important to avoid persistent moisture around the roots.
🌸 Flowering
Flowering occurs from late spring to summer. The inflorescence is tall and can exceed 1 m, forming a relatively flat panicle. The flowers are large, pendulous, and clearly gasteriform, with a swollen pink base and a lighter upper part traversed by green striations. The flowers can reach approximately 3–4 cm and are pollinated mainly by nectar-feeding birds.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, Desert CHOICE® Aloes, Haworthias & Co. is recommended, with a high content of potassium and bioavailable calcium. It is applied with irrigation, reducing or suspending fertilization during periods of lower activity.
