🌱 Morphology
Small acaulescent succulent, slow-growing and extraordinarily variable. It forms compact rosettes that, with age, produce numerous offsets from the base and can develop into dense colonies. The leaves, initially arranged in two rows, usually evolve into a spiral rosette. They are triangular or triangular-lanceolate, fleshy and ascending, 3–12 cm long, occasionally reaching 18 cm, with a flat or deeply channeled upper surface and a very marked keel on the underside, a characteristic that gives the species its name.
The surface is covered with small, rough tubercles, especially perceptible to the touch, on a green background that may show whitish or grayish spots arranged in transverse bands. The margins have small, rounded, and barely visible teeth. Under intense lighting, it can acquire reddish tones, while in shade, it retains a deeper green.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
It is endemic to South Africa, in the Western Cape province, where it is distributed across the southern regions located south of the Riviersonderend and Langeberg mountains, approximately from Hermanus to Mossel Bay, from nearly sea level to about 300 m. It lives in Renosterveld and Fynbos, usually on shale, sandstone, or limestone outcrops, frequently protected among shrubs and grasses. It receives both winter and summer rainfall, though with a tendency toward summer dryness.
Family Asphodelaceae, tribe Alooideae, section Longiflorae, series Multifariae.
❄️ Temperature — USDA 10
It tolerates minimum temperatures down to −1 ºC in cultivation. Its habitat features moderate winters, and frosts, when they occur, are light.
☀️ Lighting
Shade–partial shade, with abundant but filtered light. It can receive some mild sun, but in warm climates, it is recommended to protect it from intense direct sun. To maintain compact growth and good coloration, approximately 10–20 mol/m²/day of DLI PAR is recommended.
💧 Growth cycle and irrigation
Opportunistic. It does not have a strict summer dormancy: SANBI recommends maintaining irrigation throughout the year, although more sparingly during the winter. It is recommended to water when the substrate has dried out completely, avoiding constant moisture around the roots.
🌸 Flowering
The inflorescence is a raceme 15–70 cm long, occasionally up to 90 cm. The flowers measure approximately 16–27 mm, with the characteristic bulbous shape of Gasteria: the base is pinkish and the upper tubular part is white, marked with green lines. Flowering occurs from winter until late spring. A plant grown from a cutting can bloom in approximately 3 years.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, Desert CHOICE® Aloes, Haworthias & Co. is recommended, with a high content of potassium and bioavailable calcium. It is applied with irrigation, reducing or suspending fertilization during periods of lower activity.
Gourmet 9x9 cm black pot
This is an inimitable xerophyte grown in Madrid in a high-tech square pot, with the substrate activated with mycorrhizal fungi and biofungicides.
