🌱 Morphology
Slow-growing Gasteria bicolor cultivar with a compact rosette and fleshy, lanceolate, and slightly falcate leaves, initially arranged in two rows and adopting a more open arrangement with age. The leaves are deep green, covered in abundant spots and small greenish-white bands, creating an irregular mosaic-like pattern. They are smooth, with a clear line along the margin and an acute apex. The species is highly variable in size and shape and can form clusters through basal offsets.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
The cultivar derives from material of Gasteria bicolor, a species native to the Eastern Cape, South Africa, especially the Grahamstown (Makhanda) region. It inhabits dense thickets, among rocks and under the protection of other plants, in warm and relatively dry environments. It belongs to the Asphodelaceae family, tribe Alooideae, section Gasteria, series Gasteria.
❄️ Temperature — USDA 10
It tolerates minimum temperatures down to −1 ºC. It is recommended to protect it from prolonged frost and, especially, to prevent the substrate from remaining wet during cold spells.
☀️ Lighting
Prefers bright shade–partial shade, with abundant filtered light. Excessively intense light can cause stress and reddish coloration, while too little light can cause the leaves to stretch and reduce the intensity of the pattern. Approximately 10–20 mol/m²/day of DLI PAR is recommended.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Opportunistic. It can remain active as long as it has suitable temperatures, although growth usually intensifies with warmth and available water. It is recommended to water only when the substrate is practically dry and to reduce supply during cold periods.
🌸 Flowering
As in Gasteria bicolor, it develops a floral raceme much taller than the rosette, with pendulous, tubular flowers of approximately 12–15 mm, swollen at the base and generally pink or reddish with greenish hues. Flowering can occur at different times of the year, with a habitual peak from mid-winter to spring. The flowers are rich in nectar and attract nectarivorous birds.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, Desert CHOICE® Aloes, Haworthias & Co. is recommended, with a high content of potassium and bioavailable calcium. It is applied with irrigation, reducing or suspending fertilization during periods of lower activity.
