🌱 Morphology
A particularly green horticultural form of Gasteria armstrongii, a tiny South African succulent that literally looks like a stone covered in vegetation. It is acaulescent, very slow-growing, and remains in a distichous arrangement, with leaves facing each other in two rows and lying practically flat against the ground. The leaves are thick, triangular to triangular-lingulate, approximately 3–6 cm long and up to 3.5 cm wide, with a firm, tuberculate surface. ‘Green’ is notable for maintaining an intense green coloration, unlike other clones that can acquire bronze, reddish, or even near-mahogany tones under very intense lighting.
Over time, it may produce offsets from the base and form small colonies. Its roots are thick and contractile: during drought, they can physically pull the plant down into the soil, an extraordinary adaptation to go unnoticed among the stones of its habitat.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
Endemic to a very small area of the Eastern Cape (South Africa), in the vicinity of Jeffreys Bay–Gamtoos River, where it grows on stony soils within the Renosterveld, mimicking the surrounding stones. The climate is mild, with both summer and winter rainfall and a certain tendency toward winter dryness.
Family Asphodelaceae, tribe Alooideae, section Longiflorae, series Multifariae.
❄️ Temperature — USDA 10
Tolerates minimum temperatures down to −1 ºC in cultivation. It is a mild-climate species; its natural habitat has average annual minimum temperatures close to 12 ºC, so its horticultural tolerance should not be interpreted as equivalent to prolonged exposure to frost.
☀️ Lighting
Shade–partial shade, with abundant but filtered light. Excessive direct radiation can cause browning or reddening of the leaves; to preserve the green character of ‘Green’, it is especially beneficial to maintain intense but not scorching light. Target guideline: 10–20 mol/m²/day of DLI PAR.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Opportunistic. In its habitat, it receives precipitation in both summer and winter, so it does not exhibit rigid summer dormancy. It is recommended to water when the substrate is completely dry, adapting the frequency to the temperature and light intensity; during the hottest and driest periods, it is advisable to space out waterings.
🌸 Flowering
Produces a slender inflorescence up to about 50 cm, with hanging flowers approximately 2–3 cm long, intensely reddish with a small yellowish area toward the apex. Flowering is concentrated in January–February, mid-southern summer.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, Desert CHOICE® Aloes, Haworthias & Co. is recommended, with high potassium and bioavailable calcium content. It is applied with irrigation, reducing or suspending fertilization during periods of lower activity.
