🌱 Morphology
Miniature... Tiny cactus, generally cespitose, forming small cushions of subglobose bodies, up to 4 cm in diameter, light green. It presents between 10 and 18 ribs divided into highly visible hexagonal or rounded tubercles. The areoles produce spines that are difficult to differentiate between central and radial: usually one protruding black central spine, up to 4 mm, accompanied by 10–14 very fine, blackish radial spines, 2–3 mm long, appressed and frequently arranged in a comb-like shape.
🌍 Distribution, habitat and family
It is distributed throughout northeastern Argentina, southern and west-central Brazil, and Paraguay, mainly between 150 and 500 m altitude. It inhabits grasslands, rocky outcrops and stony terrain in subtropical environments. It belongs to the Cactaceae family, subfamily Cactoideae.
❄️ Temperature · USDA Zone 9b
It tolerates minimum temperatures of up to −4 ºC when kept dry and perfectly acclimated, although it is advisable to avoid the combination of cold, humidity and wet substrate.
☀️ Lighting
It requires very intense lighting and several hours of direct sun. As a general guideline during active growth, a DLI PAR of 20–30 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ is recommended. Sufficient radiation promotes compact growth and well-defined spination.
💧 Growth cycle and irrigation
Winter rest. During the cold months, it should be kept practically dry. In spring and summer, growth resumes and it can be watered abundantly, always allowing the substrate to dry out completely between waterings. During periods of drought, it may partially retract and remain protected among vegetation or stones.
🌸 Flowering
Flowers are sulfur yellow, large in relation to the tiny body, up to 3.5 cm in length and 2–4.5 cm in diameter. As with other Frailea species, it can also produce cleistogamous flowers, capable of fruiting without opening.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, a fertilizer with a high content of assimilable calcium and low nitrogen levels is recommended, such as Desert CHOICE® Cactaceae, applied once a month when watering. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Flowering.
This is an inimitable xerophyte grown in Madrid in a technological square pot with substrate activated with mycorrhizal fungi and biofungicides.
