🌱 Morphology
Small perennial succulent, acaulescent or with a very short stem, forming compact clumps. Each rosette develops 4–8 opposite, thick, ovate-rhombic, and keeled leaves, green in color, with 3–6 robust, whitish teeth on each margin. The surface features numerous white dots and, characteristically, prominent whitish tubercles or warts, a diagnostic trait that distinguishes it from the other species in the genus.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
Endemic to the Eastern Cape, South Africa, between Bedford, Fort Beaufort, and Grahamstown, where it appears in grasslands, frequently camouflaged among the grasses, on soils derived from Karoo geological formations, at an altitude between 520 and 980 m. It belongs to the Aizoaceae family, subfamily Ruschioideae.
❄️ Temperature
USDA Zone 9b–11. It tolerates minimum temperatures down to −4 ºC while keeping the substrate dry. This figure comes from horticultural references that place the species in USDA 9b as its lower limit; the RHS considers it frost-sensitive and recommends protected cultivation in cold climates.
☀️ Lighting
It requires very intense lighting to keep the rosettes compact, properly develop the leaf tubercles, and encourage flowering. During active growth, a target of DLI PAR >20 mol/m²/day is recommended. The flowers also need direct sun to open completely.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Summer dormancy. Its activity is concentrated mainly in the cool seasons. During the active period, abundant watering is recommended, allowing the substrate to dry out completely before the next. During the dormant period, water supply should be significantly reduced, especially avoiding keeping the substrate moist for long periods.
🌸 Flowering
Solitary, yellow, daisy-like flowers, up to about 4 cm in diameter, which open in the afternoon and need sun to fully unfold. Natural flowering occurs in autumn; in Madrid, approximately between October and November.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, a fertilizer with a high content of assimilable calcium and potassium is recommended, such as Desert CHOICE® Aizoáceas, applied during watering and avoiding excessive nitrogen inputs.
This is an inimitable Xerophytic plant grown in Madrid in a high-tech square pot with the substrate activated by mycorrhizal fungi.
