🌱 Morphology
Small perennial, compact and caespitose succulent, up to 5 cm tall, forming clusters of rosettes. Each rosette has 4–8 very fleshy, ovate-lanceolate leaves, 15–40(–50) × 5–15(–25) mm, with a bright green surface and numerous small dark idioblasts visible beneath the epidermis. The margins and keel are whitish and may have 0 to 5 short, robust teeth on each side. With high sun exposure, it acquires reddish tones.
🌍 Distribution, habitat and family
Endemic to South Africa, mainly in the western Eastern Cape, with scattered populations reaching parts of the Western Cape. It lives on rocky outcrops and crevices in rock plates, among hillside stones, within the Karoo and areas of Albany Thicket and Eastern Fynbos-Renosterveld. It belongs to the Aizoaceae family. It is listed as Least Concern (LC).
❄️ Temperature
USDA Zone 9b–10b. It tolerates minimum temperatures down to −4 ºC in dry conditions and for brief periods. Horticultural references place its hardiness around USDA 9b–10, so intense cold combined with moisture in the substrate should be avoided.
☀️ Lighting
It needs very intense light to keep the rosettes compact and develop the characteristic reddish coloration with high sun exposure. During active growth, a target of >20 mol/m²/day of DLI PAR is recommended.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Summer dormancy. During the active period, it is recommended to water abundantly and allow the substrate to dry out completely before the next watering. In summer, with high temperatures, water supply is significantly reduced.
🌸 Flowering
Solitary yellow flowers, large in relation to the plant. Natural flowering occurs in autumn in the southern hemisphere, approximately between March and May; in Madrid, this corresponds to September–November.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, a fertilizer with a high content of assimilable calcium and potassium is recommended, such as Desert CHOICE® Aizoáceas, applied during watering and avoiding excessive nitrogen supply.
This is an inimitable Xerophytic plant grown in Madrid in a technological square pot and with the substrate activated with mycorrhizal fungi.
