🌱 Morphology
A true living sculpture: numerous fleshy branches emerge from a thick central caudex, twisting and extending like the snakes on Medusa's head. It can reach over 1 m in diameter, although it remains low, with the caudex partially buried. The branches are cylindrical, tuberculate, and lack persistent leaves; small foliar organs appear at the tips and fall off quickly. It is one of the most characteristic medusoid euphorbias.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
It belongs to the Euphorbiaceae family, and its natural range extends from southwestern Namibia to the Cape provinces in South Africa. It grows in sandy plains, stony slopes, and rocky outcrops, especially in dry environments near the coast.
❄️ Temperature — USDA Zone 9b–11b
It tolerates minimum temperatures down to −3.9 ºC, especially in dry and well-acclimated specimens. There are reports of specimens that have withstood lower temperatures, but for cultivation, it is more prudent to consider −3.9 ºC as the USDA Zone 9b reference.
☀️ Lighting
It requires very intense lighting to develop a compact structure and maintain the characteristic shape of its branches. It can be grown in full sun, although specimens accustomed to shade must be acclimated progressively. A target of 18–25 mol/m²/day of DLI PAR during active growth is appropriate.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter dormancy. During spring and much of the summer, it is in active growth, and abundant watering is recommended, allowing the substrate to dry out completely before watering again. During the winter, it should be kept practically dry. Furthermore, during the weeks of maximum summer heat, a second dormancy or slowdown may occur, so it is advisable to reduce watering and wait for the plant to resume activity before resuming normal watering.
🌸 Flowering
Small inflorescences appear clustered around the ends of the branches. The cyathia have five green glands with characteristic whitish appendages, which form a kind of small crown around the floral structures. In its natural habitat, it flowers mainly between May and September; in Madrid, it can bloom during spring and summer.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, a specific fertilizer for succulents is recommended, with a high content of assimilable calcium, such as Desert CHOICE® Succulents, applied once a month when watering.
This is an inimitable xerophyte grown in Madrid in a technological square pot and with the substrate activated with mycorrhizal fungi and biofungicides.
