🌱 Morphology
One of the Brazilian blonds... Cactus of very variable appearance, generally solitary or forming groups. The stem starts out globose or depressed and acquires a characteristic club-shaped form with age, reaching approximately 50–70 cm in height and 20–27 cm in diameter in adult specimens. It has 23–38 straight, sharp, and relatively narrow ribs, with areoles very close to each other. The spines are thin, acicular, flexible, and slightly curved, pale yellow, reddish, or chestnut in color when young, becoming greyer with age. It can develop up to 3 central spines and several radial ones, some of them notably long.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
It is found in Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil, and in the province of Misiones, Argentina, growing on walls and large basalt rock outcrops, often nearly vertical. These populations are associated with humid subtropical environments, but established on rocky surfaces with excellent drainage. It belongs to the Cactaceae family, Cactoideae subfamily, and Notocacteae tribe. The name Eriocactus claviceps is the historical name most used in horticulture.
❄️ Temperature · USDA Zone 9b–11b
It tolerates minimum temperatures of up to −4 ºC when completely dry and acclimatized. Although it comes from a humid subtropical region, in cultivation, it should not be kept wet during cold periods.
☀️ Lighting
It needs intense lighting to develop compact growth and well-formed spination. It tolerates direct sun after progressive acclimatization. As a guideline during active growth, a DLI PAR of 20–30 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ is recommended.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter rest. The rest period is relatively short. During autumn, watering is progressively reduced until the substrate is kept practically dry during the winter. From spring onwards, water supply is gradually increased, and during the summer, it can be watered abundantly provided the substrate drains quickly and dries between waterings. It should not remain damp at low temperatures.
🌸 Flowering
It produces large and very showy flowers, sulfur yellow to golden yellow in color, which appear at the top of the stem. They reach approximately 5.5–6 cm in length and up to 6 cm in diameter, with a widely open corolla. Flowering is concentrated from late spring to summer.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, a fertilizer with a high content of assimilable calcium and low nitrogen levels, such as Desert CHOICE® Cactaceae, is recommended, applied once a month when watering. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Flowering.
This is an inimitable xerophyte grown in Madrid in a technological square pot and with the substrate activated with mycorrhizal fungi.
