Echinofossulocactus coptonogonus | Sharp-ribbed cactus
€10,60
🌱 Morphology
Generally solitary, slow-growing cactus with a globose to depressed-globose stem, grayish-green to bluish-green in color, which can reach approximately 5–10 cm in height and 8–11 cm in diameter. Unlike many species in the genus, it has only 10–15 ribs, which are thick, angular, and slightly wavy, with deep transverse furrows. The areoles are sunken into the ribs and develop 3–7 spines, generally robust and grayish-white, some directed downwards.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
Native to Mexico, mainly from Guanajuato, Hidalgo, San Luis Potosí, and Zacatecas, with records also in Aguascalientes and Jalisco. It inhabits arid and semi-arid regions, on both limestone and volcanic terrain. It belongs to the Cactaceae family.
❄️ Temperature — USDA Zone 8b–11b
It is a relatively cold-hardy species when kept dry and well-acclimated. It tolerates minimum temperatures down to −7 ºC for short periods. During winter, it must be kept dry, especially when low temperatures and humidity coincide.
☀️ Lighting
During active growth, it requires very intense lighting, with a target of approximately 18–25 mol/m²/day of DLI PAR. Direct sun promotes compact growth and robust spination, although specimens grown under protection should be acclimated progressively.
💧 Growth cycle and irrigation
Winter dormancy. During the active period, it is recommended to water abundantly and allow the substrate to dry completely before watering again. In winter, it should be kept dry or practically dry, especially at low temperatures, to reduce the risk of rot.
🌸 Flowering
It produces flowers approximately 3–4 cm in diameter, white, with a characteristic violet, purple, or carmine central band or midvein on the petals. They appear near the apex and, in Madrid, can be expected mainly between April and June.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, a fertilizer with high levels of assimilable calcium and low nitrogen levels is recommended, such as Desert CHOICE® Cactaceae, applied once a month during watering. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Flowering.
This is an inimitable xerophyte grown in Madrid in a high-tech square pot, with the substrate activated with mycorrhizal fungi and biofungicides.
