🌱 Morphology
Natural hybrid, highly variable, generally cespitose, capable of forming clusters of numerous stems. The stems are cylindrical, green, approximately 15–20 cm long and 8–11 cm in diameter. It typically has 11–13 ribs. The areoles are equipped with 5–8 straight and spreading central spines, reddish, approximately 1.2–1.9 cm long, accompanied by 11–16 reddish-gray radial spines, up to 1.5 cm long. The combination of parental characteristics makes its shape, coloration, and spination highly variable between populations.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
Natural hybrid distributed from New Mexico and West Texas to northern Chihuahua (Mexico). It is found in arid and semi-arid environments, among scrubland and xerophytic vegetation, generally on well-drained mineral soils. The complex exhibits populations with intermediate characteristics between Echinocereus coccineus and Echinocereus dasyacanthus. It belongs to the Cactaceae family.
❄️ Temperature — USDA Zone 7b–11b
Tolerates minimum temperatures down to −12 ºC in dry, properly acclimated specimens. Resistance may vary between populations and depends especially on the tissue remaining dry during frost.
☀️ Lighting
During active growth, it requires intense lighting, with a target of approximately 18–25 mol/m²/day of DLI PAR. It tolerates several hours of direct sun. High light levels promote compact growth, more developed spination, and abundant flowering.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter rest. During winter, it should be kept cool, bright, and completely dry. In spring and summer, during active growth, abundant watering is recommended, allowing the substrate to dry out completely before the next watering. Drainage must be excellent. At the end of the active period, watering is progressively reduced until it is kept dry during the rest period.
🌸 Flowering
The flowers are large and widely funnel-shaped, with highly variable coloration: they can be orange, pink, yellow, or red, depending on the population and the combination of its parental traits. They reach approximately 5–7 cm in diameter and appear near the stem apexes. In Madrid, they can be expected primarily between May and June.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, a fertilizer with a high content of assimilable calcium and low nitrogen levels, such as Desert CHOICE® Cactaceae, is recommended, applied once a month during watering. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Flowering.
This is an inimitable xerophyte grown in Madrid in a high-tech square pot and with substrate activated with mycorrhizal fungi and biofungicides.
