🌱 Morphology
Low-growing botanical species that forms a compact, perfectly imbricated, and generally almost sessile rosette, although it may develop a small stem with age. It reaches approximately 11 cm in diameter.
The leaves, about 60 in adult specimens, are arranged in very regular spirals. They are oblong-ovate, wider at the base, fleshy, and ending in a mucron, measuring about 4–5 cm in length and 2.2–2.7 cm in width. They are densely covered by a bluish-white pruinose coating, responsible for its extraordinary silvery appearance, while the margins may acquire reddish tones.
Its rosette resembles a rose carved in blue porcelain, with the leaves overlapping like petals. It is precisely this combination of glaucous blue color, pruinose coating, and imbricated arrangement that made this species one of the most historically appreciated Echeverias.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
Family Crassulaceae · Series Pruinosae.
Endemic species of the mountains of Puebla and Oaxaca, Mexico, where it grows in high mountain areas. The original reference places it in the high mountains of Mexico.
Echeveria peacockii is a very widespread historical name in horticulture, but it is not the correct name for this species: peacockii Croucher corresponds to a synonym of Dudleya pulverulenta. The correct name of the Echeveria is Echeveria desmetiana.
❄️ Temperature
USDA Zone 9a. Tolerates minimum temperatures of up to −6 ºC occasionally when completely dry. Moisture combined with low temperatures can cause damage to the roots and neck.
☀️ Lighting
Full sun. Indicative DLI: 20–30 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹. High lighting promotes a compact rosette and allows the development of the characteristic silvery-bluecoloration, while moderate light stress can intensify the reddish tones of the margins. In Madrid, gradual acclimatization to direct sun after winter is recommended.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter dormancy. During the active growth period, abundant watering and letting the substrate dry out completely before watering again are recommended. Its mountain origin allows it to withstand relatively low temperatures, but it does not tolerate waterlogging.
In autumn, watering will be gradually reduced, and during the winter dormancy, it will be kept practically dry, especially when temperatures are low.
🌸 Flowering
Produces reddish flower stalks that can reach approximately 27 cm to the first flower. The flowers are bell-shaped, with the outside reddish and the inside yellow, forming an inflorescence raised above the rosette.
No sufficiently documented age of first flowering has been found to establish a reliable figure. There is also no conclusive information about its self-fertility.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, Desert CHOICE® Succulents is recommended, applied after watering. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Flowering. During winter dormancy, fertilization is not recommended.
This is an inimitable xerophyte cultivated in Madrid in a technological square pot and with the substrate activated with mycorrhizal fungi and biofungicides.
