        🌱 Morphology
Compact Echeveria cultivar that develops a dense and symmetrical rosette, formed by extraordinarily fleshy leaves. Its most striking feature is the arrangement of the leaves, which fold over themselves and rise upwards, creating a sculptural rosette that looks very different from the flat architecture typical of many Echeverias.

The leaves have a smooth epidermis, with no noticeable caruncles or roughness, and a coloration ranging from yellowish green to jade green. The surface lacks the intense pruinose coating characteristic of other cultivars, thus maintaining a clean, satiny appearance.

The rosette can reach approximately 15 cm in diameter in adult specimens. Its growth is slow to moderate, and it may produce new rosettes over time. The shape of the leaves is its main ornamental trait and is best preserved when it receives sufficient light.

        🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
Family Crassulaceae. As it is a horticultural cultivar, it has no natural distribution of its own, nor should it be assigned to an infrageneric section or series of Echeveria.

No reliable publication documenting its parents or a specific botanical origin has been found. Cultivation sources market it simply as Echeveria ‘Marabu’, expressly differentiating it from Echeveria nodulosa ‘Maruba Benitsukasa’, which is a different cultivar.

        ❄️ Temperature
USDA Zone 10a. It tolerates minimum temperatures down to −1 ºC occasionally, provided it is completely dry and protected from humidity.

It is not recommended to keep it for prolonged periods at temperatures near 0 ºC. In winter, it is advisable to protect it especially from the combination of cold, humidity, and poor ventilation, which can cause damage to the roots and crown.

        ☀️ Lighting
Bright partial shade. Indicative PAR DLI: 15–25 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹. It requires plenty of light throughout the year to maintain the compact shape of the rosette and the characteristic folding of its leaves. Cultivation references recommend a very bright location but advise avoiding the most intense direct sun during midday hours, especially during the warm months.

In Madrid, it can receive soft direct sun during the first hours of the day or late afternoon, always after a gradual acclimatization. During the summer, light protection from the most intense radiation allows for high lighting without the risk of burns.

In low light, the leaves may open up and lose some of their characteristic vertical arrangement, while excessively intense exposure with very high temperatures can cause damage to the epidermis.

        💧 Growth cycle and irrigation
Winter dormancy. In cultivation in Spain, it concentrates its activity during spring and summer, while it progressively reduces growth during autumn and winter. The cultivation recommendations consulted advise practically suspending irrigation during autumn and winter.

During the active growth period, it is recommended to perform abundant irrigation and allow the substrate to dry completely before watering again. Water should be applied directly to the substrate, avoiding retention between the folded leaves.

The particular foliar architecture makes good ventilation after watering especially important. During episodes of extreme heat, if the plant slows down its activity, watering should be spaced out. In autumn, they should be gradually reduced, and during winter dormancy, the substrate should be kept practically dry.

        🌸 Flowering
The sources consulted do not provide sufficiently precise data on the length of the floral stems, the number of flowers, or the age at first flowering for 'Marabu'. It would not be reliable to attribute figures from another species or cultivar to it.

In cultivation, flowering can appear during the temperate seasons, when the plant has reached sufficient maturity and has received adequate lighting.

        🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, Desert CHOICE® Succulents is recommended, applied after watering. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Flowering. Fertilizing is not recommended during winter dormancy.

This is an inimitable xerophyte grown in Madrid in a high-tech square pot with substrate activated with mycorrhizal fungi and biofungicides.
