🌱 Morphology
Hybrid of Echeveria derenbergii × Echeveria elegans ‘Potosina’, distinguished by its spectacular irregular variegation in bright green, cream, and ivory tones.
It forms a compact, symmetrical rosette of fleshy, spatulate, and slightly pointed leaves, with the orderly arrangement characteristic of its parents. The green background can take on bluish or pinkish hues under intense lighting, while the areas without chlorophyll appear as randomly distributed ivory stripes and brushstrokes.
Variegation can vary greatly even between leaves of the same plant, and occasionally, some leaves may produce predominantly green sections. It should not be confused with Echeveria ‘Lola’ f. variegata, which has a very similar appearance but a different lineage.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
Family Crassulaceae. Horticultural hybrid: Echeveria derenbergii × Echeveria elegans ‘Potosina’. It has no native distribution.
Its genetic combination explains the compact rosette, the glaucous tones, and the ability to develop pink and reddish colors under high light intensity. The variegated form is especially prized for the contrast between the green areas and the zones of reduced chlorophyllous tissue.
❄️ Temperature
USDA Zone 9b. Tolerates minimum temperatures of up to −4 ºC occasionally, provided the substrate is completely dry. In cultivation, it is preferable to protect it from prolonged frosts and, above all, from the combination of cold and moisture.
☀️ Lighting
Bright partial shade. Approximate DLI PAR: 15–25 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹. It needs plenty of light to maintain a compact rosette and preserve the contrast of the variegation, but the variegated areas contain less chlorophyll and are more sensitive to excessive radiation and heat. In Madrid, gentle morning sun or a very bright location with protection from the midday summer sun is recommended.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Opportunistic. It exhibits more active growth during the mild seasons of spring and autumn, while the intense heat of summer can cause a marked slowdown. During active growth, it is recommended to water abundantly and allow the substrate to dry out completely before the next watering.
During heatwaves, watering should be spaced out, and the substrate should not be kept moist when the plant has temporarily stopped growing. In winter, watering should also be considerably reduced, especially at low temperatures.
🌸 Flowering
It can produce tall inflorescences with bell-shaped flowers, generally in pink, reddish, and yellow tones inherited from its parents. Echeverias in this group primarily flower during the growing seasons.
No sufficiently reliable documentation has been found to establish the age of first flowering or to confirm its self-fertility.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, Desert CHOICE® Succulents is recommended, applied after watering. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Flowering. Do not fertilize during dormancy.
This is an inimitable xerophyte grown in Madrid in a high-tech square pot with substrate activated with mycorrhizal fungi and biofungicides.
