🌱 Morphology
A compact succulent that forms large, dense rosettes slightly elevated on a short stem. It can reach about 30–34 cm in diameter in well-developed adult specimens. Its leaves are elongated, fleshy, and broad at the base, narrowing sharply in the upper third to form a defined tip. The surface is covered with a blue-gray pruinose coating, while the margins and apex take on shades of deep pink, purple-red, or magenta. This combination of powdery blue and bright edges is the most distinctive feature of the brandtii form.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
Family Crassulaceae · Subfamily Sempervivoideae · Tribe Sedeae · Series Urceolatae. It is native to Jalisco, Mexico. The original material was collected on a moss-covered rock under oak trees near the road between Laguna de Sayula and Tapalpa, at an altitude of 2,070 m. It was later also located in the Barranca de Ferrería de Tula. It is currently accepted as Echeveria colorata f. brandtii; the name Echeveria colorata var. brandtii is a taxonomic synonym.
❄️ Temperature
USDA zone 8b. It tolerates minimum temperatures close to −6 ºC only occasionally and with dry substrate; this figure is indicative and does not guarantee the resistance of each specimen. In Madrid, it is recommended to protect it from prolonged frosts and, especially, from the combination of cold and winter moisture.
☀️ Lighting
Full sun. Indicative PAR DLI: 15–25 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹. Abundant light promotes compact rosettes and reddish margins. It must be gradually acclimated to direct sunlight; during Madrid heatwaves, it is advisable to protect it from the most intense radiation to avoid burns and heat stress.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter dormancy. During active growth, it is recommended to water abundantly and let the substrate dry out completely before the next watering. Water should not be allowed to collect in the center of the rosette. In winter, watering should be significantly reduced, keeping the substrate almost dry during cold periods.
🌸 Flowering
It produces lateral flower stems with bell-shaped flowers in pink or coral shades, with a yellowish interior, clustered in inflorescences. Flowering usually appears during spring or summer, depending on growing conditions. There is not enough solid data to establish an age for first flowering.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, Desert CHOICE® Succulents is recommended, applied after watering. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Flowering. Fertilizing is not recommended during winter dormancy.
