Cylindrophyllum comptoni | Little Karoo Fingers
€10,60
🌱 Morphology
Long fingers...A small perennial succulent of the Aizoaceae family that forms dense, compact cushions, initially small but capable of reaching about 13 cm in height and 25 cm in diameter. The stems are very short and the leaves, which resemble small fingers, are cylindrical, fleshy, greenish-gray, slightly flattened, and have an acute apex. They can reach about 8–10 cm in length and 1 cm in thickness and appear relatively spaced from one another because the old leaves remain for several years among the new ones. With intense lighting, they can acquire purple tones at the tips.
🌍 Distribution, habitat and family
Endemic to the Little Karoo, Western Cape (South Africa), where it is found in the vicinity of Montagu, Ladismith, and south of Swellendam. It grows between 450 and 1,290 m in altitude, on north-facing rocky slopes and surfaces, mainly on soils derived from shales. It is a species native to a region with winter rains and very poor soils.
❄️ Temperature
USDA Zone 9a–11. It tolerates minimum temperatures down to −7 ºC for short periods, provided that the substrate remains completely dry. This cold hardiness is based on specialized horticultural references and not on a specific field evaluation.
☀️ Lighting
It requires very high lighting, with a target DLI PAR greater than 20 mol/m²/day during growth. Direct sun favors the compact development of the cushions and can intensify the purple tones of the apices. During summer, with high temperatures, it is advisable to reduce direct radiation and maintain good ventilation.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Summer dormancy. It is a primarily winter-growing succulent, with activity from autumn and especially from late winter to spring. During the summer, it notably reduces its activity and should be kept practically dry. During the active period, it is recommended to water abundantly and let the substrate dry completely before the next watering. Excess moisture can easily cause root rot.
🌸 Flowering
It produces solitary flowers that are extraordinarily large in relation to the plant, up to about 7.5 cm in diameter, ranging from silvery white to straw-colored, with filaments pink at the base. In South Africa, it blooms mainly during spring and early summer, approximately from September to November; in Madrid, this corresponds to March-May. The flowers open around midday and close in the late afternoon.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, a fertilizer with a high content of assimilable calcium and potassium is recommended, such as Desert CHOICE® Aizoáceas, applied during watering and avoiding excessive nitrogen inputs.
This is an inimitable Xerophytic plant grown in Madrid in a technological square pot and with the substrate activated with mycorrhizal fungi.
Gourmet 7 × 7 cm black pot.
