Cryptanthus bivittatus 'Pink Star' | Pink Star Earth
€10,60
🌱 Morphology
Photosynthesis like a cactus! Small terrestrial bromeliad that forms a star-shaped, flattened, and very compact rosette, about 10–20 cm tall and up to 25–30 cm in diameter. Its leaves are rigid, elongated, pointed, and wavy, with small teeth on the margins. The coloration combines bands of deep pink or pastel pink with green and brownish-green areas, creating a highly decorative longitudinal pattern. The intensity of the pink depends on the light received. After flowering, the mother rosette produces offsets that allow for the formation of groups of new stars.
🌍 Origin, habitat, and family
Family Bromeliaceae, subfamily Bromelioideae. The species Cryptanthus bivittatus is native to northeast Brazil, especially the state of Pernambuco, where it grows on the forest floor, among leaf litter and organic materials, with high ambient humidity and filtered light. ‘Pink Star’ is a horticultural selection prized for its pink bands and small size. Unlike many epiphytic bromeliads, it is terrestrial and does not have a central reservoir for storing water.
❄️ Temperature — USDA 11
It is a tropical plant sensitive to cold. For safe cultivation, it is recommended to keep it between 18 and 28 °C and avoid temperatures below 15 °C, especially if the substrate is moist.
☀️ Lighting
It needs plenty of indirect light to maintain the intensity of its pink tones. A target PAR DLI of 8–15 mol/m²/day is recommended. Soft early morning sun can be beneficial after gradual acclimatization, but intense sunlight can burn the leaves and discolor its bands.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Opportunistic. It grows when it has adequate heat, light, and ambient humidity. It is recommended to keep the substrate slightly moist, without waterlogging, and allow the surface to dry partially between waterings. It should not be subjected to prolonged droughts like those tolerated by cacti and other xerophytic succulents. It appreciates moderate to high ambient humidity and good ventilation.
🌸 Flowering
The flowers are small and appear in the center of the rosette, generally hidden among the leaves. As with other bromeliads, the flowering rosette may gradually lose vigor while developing basal offsets that perpetuate the plant.
🌿 Nutrition
During active growth, a balanced fertilizer for bromeliads or houseplants is recommended, at a moderate dose. Desert CHOICE® Succulents would not be the specific reference formulation for this species, as its cultivation needs differ from those of xerophytes adapted to prolonged droughts.
