🌱 Morphology
A perennial succulent plant, small and densely branched from the base, forming compact clusters of numerous rosettes. When flowering, it reaches approximately 30 cm in height including the inflorescence, although there are much smaller forms that form cushions of just a few centimeters. The leaves are arranged very densely, apparently in two rows, and remain clustered even during flowering. They are broadly obovate, fleshy, generally less than 15 mm long, with a characteristically truncate apex. The surface can be densely hairy or practically glabrous, but it presents cilia on the margins. The color varies between green, grayish-green, and reddish tones under intense lighting.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
Crassulaceae family. Distributed throughout Namibia and South Africa, mainly in southern Namibia and the Cape provinces, along the eastern slopes of the mountains located between the Great Karoo, Tanqua Karoo, and Bushmanland, reaching as far as the vicinity of Laingsburg. It grows in protected rock crevices and under rock ledges, within the dry environments of the Succulent Karoo and karroid zones. SANBI currently considers it to be of least concern.
❄️ Temperature
USDA Zone 8b–11b. Its distribution in interior and mountainous regions explains an appreciable tolerance to low temperatures when kept dry. During episodes of intense cold, it is recommended to keep the substrate completely dry. It can tolerate minimum temperatures of down to -7 C.
☀️ Lighting
Intense lighting is recommended, with a target of 15–25 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ of DLI PAR. It tolerates direct sun if properly acclimated. Forms that grow naturally protected under ledges can be cultivated with slightly more filtered lighting, always avoiding excessive shading that causes the rosettes to elongate.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Summer dormancy. Its distribution is mainly found in regions with scarce and highly seasonal rainfall in the Succulent Karoo and Karoo. Growth is favored by moderate temperatures, while intense heat and extreme dryness can slow down activity. During the active period, it is recommended to water abundantly and let the substrate dry completely before the next one. During periods of extreme temperatures, watering should be spaced out significantly, keeping the plant practically dry during intense cold.
🌸 Flowering
The inflorescence is terminal and generally unbranched, with the appearance of a compact spike. The lower groups of flowers may have peduncles, while the upper ones are sessile. The flowers are tubular, creamy white to pale yellow in color, with oblong and slightly recurved petals. In Madrid, flowering can occur approximately between April and July, depending on growing conditions.
