🌱 Morphology
Small perennial succulent that usually forms a rosette, occasionally two or three, with very tight, recurved leaves, creating the characteristic hemispherical profile that gives the species its name. During flowering, it can reach approximately 5–12 cm in height, up to about 16 cm. The leaves are sessile, fleshy, and relatively rigid, approximately 1.5–3 cm long and 1.5–2.5 cm wide, although they can reach larger dimensions. They are obovate, occasionally elliptical, dorsiventrally flattened, and often slightly grooved along the midrib. This clone generally features an acute apex with a small mucro. They are glabrous, except for a characteristic dense row of cilia on the margin, and their coloration varies from green to grayish-green or brownish-green.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
Family Crassulaceae. It is endemic to South Africa and is distributed throughout the Cape provinces, from the mountains around the Knersvlakte and Bokkeveld, through the western Karoo and the vicinity of Worcester, eastward to near Willowmore and the Kouga Mountains. It grows mainly on stony slopes and depressions on sandstone, quartzite, and their derived soils, within Fynbos and Succulent Karoo environments.
❄️ Temperature — USDA Zone 9b–11b
It tolerates cool temperatures and occasional cold spells when completely dry and acclimated. Special caution is recommended with the combination of low temperatures and moisture in the substrate.
☀️ Lighting
Indicative target of 15–25 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ of DLI PAR. High lighting keeps the rosette compact and favors a more intense grayish-green or brownish coloration. Gradual acclimation to direct sun is recommended.
💧 Growth cycle and irrigation
Summer dormancy. Its distribution is concentrated in regions of the Cape with marked seasonality and highly arid environments. Growth is favored by moderate temperatures and water availability, always alternating abundant watering with complete drying of the substrate. During periods of intense heat, it may slow down and watering should be spaced out. In winter, if temperatures are low, it is recommended to considerably reduce water intake and keep the substrate dry between waterings. It is not advisable to keep it permanently moist, especially due to the compact structure of the rosette.
🌸 Flowering
The inflorescence is an elongated thyrse, occasionally with a spicate appearance, which rises clearly above the rosette. It produces numerous small flowers with a white or cream tubular corolla, whose petals separate and recurve progressively; the anthers are black. In Spain, flowering can be expected approximately between March and May, depending on cultivation conditions.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active period, Desert CHOICE® Succulents is recommended, applied after watering and with the substrate previously hydrated. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Flowering.
This is an inimitable xerophytic plant grown in Madrid in a technological square pot and with substrate activated with mycorrhizal fungi and biofungicides.
