🌱 Morphology
A compact succulent hybrid created by Myron Kimnach in 1981, the result of a cross between Crassula susannae and Crassula perfoliata var. minor. It develops several short, densely leafed stems, forming a compact structure that can reach approximately 15 cm in height.
The leaves are very fleshy, short, and grayish-green in color, covered in fine white pubescence that gives them a slightly velvety appearance. They are arranged in opposite, decussate pairs, very close to each other and strongly imbricated, forming a characteristic X-shaped pyramidal structure around the stem. With high light exposure, they can acquire darker or reddish tones.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
It has no natural distribution of its own: ‘Coralita’ is a horticultural hybrid developed in cultivation. Its documented parentage is Crassula susannae × C. perfoliata var. minor. Both of its parents are South African and belong to the Crassulaceae family.
❄️ Temperature — USDA Zone 9b–11b
It is a hybrid from the warm and arid regions of South Africa, but tolerance to occasional low temperatures should not be confused with true frost resistance. It is recommended to keep it dry when temperatures are low and to especially avoid the combination of cold, humidity, and poor ventilation.
☀️ Lighting
It requires very high light to maintain short internodes, the characteristic pyramidal shape, and the grayish leaf coloration. Guideline DLI PAR: 15–25 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹.
Intense lighting is especially important for this hybrid: in low light, the stems elongate, the leaves spread out, and much of its compact architecture is lost. The historical ISI record specifically noted that it remained compact with intense light and careful watering.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
As a horticultural hybrid, it does not have a natural climatic cycle of its own. Its behavior combines characteristics of its parents and can remain active for much of the year if it has moderate temperatures and sufficient lighting.
During active growth, abundant watering is recommended, allowing the substrate to dry out completely before watering again. With very high temperatures, growth may slow down and water supply should be reduced. In winter, if temperatures are low and growth stops, it is recommended to space out waterings significantly and keep the substrate dry for extended periods.
🌸 Flowering
It produces branched terminal inflorescences, supported by peduncles that can reach approximately 7–8 cm. The flowers are small and coral-pink, forming very striking clusters that contrast with the grayish foliage.
Flowering depends considerably on maturity, lighting, and growing conditions; it can appear during growth periods with moderate temperatures.
🌿 Nutrition
During active growth periods, Desert CHOICE® Succulents is recommended, applied after watering and with the substrate pre-moistened. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Flowering.
This is an inimitable xerophyte grown in Madrid in a professional square pot, with substrate activated by mycorrhizal fungi and biofungicides.
