🌱 Morphology
Perennial succulent plant, with an erect, decumbent, or somewhat creeping habit, highly branched, with partially woody stems approximately 5–40 cm long. The leaves are opposite and arranged in four very densely imbricated rows, practically hiding the stems and giving the plant its characteristic small cord-like or scaly structure appearance. Its leaves are sessile, fleshy, flat, and triangular to ovate in shape, approximately 1.5 to 4 mm, green, greyish-green, yellowish, or even brownish. Old leaves usually remain attached to the branches.
🌍 Distribution, habitat and family
Crassulaceae family. Species widely distributed throughout Namibia and South Africa, from Namaqualand and Bushmanland to the Karoo, the Cape provinces, and the western Eastern Cape, reaching the Free State. It mainly inhabits stony slopes, rocky outcrops, and karroid vegetation areas, frequently protected among shrubs.
❄️ Temperature
USDA Zone 9b–11b. Tolerates moderate drops in temperature when the substrate remains dry. During episodes of intense cold, it is advisable to keep it protected and practically dry.
☀️ Lighting
Intense lighting is recommended, with a target of 15–25 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ of DLI PAR. It tolerates direct sun when properly acclimatized, although during episodes of extreme heat, it may benefit from some protection during the hours of maximum radiation.
💧 Growth cycle and irrigation
Opportunistic. It is an ecologically highly variable species, and it is not appropriate to impose a rigid rest period for all its populations. It maintains activity mainly at moderate temperatures and may slow down during both intense cold and prolonged episodes of heat and drought. During active growth, it is recommended to water abundantly and allow the substrate to dry out completely before the next watering. During periods of slow growth, watering should be spaced out considerably, avoiding continuous moisture around the roots.
🌸 Flowering
It produces tiny yellowish-green flowers, occasionally described as pale yellow, grouped in small, practically sessile axillary inflorescences along the stems. In Madrid, flowering can be concentrated approximately between April and October, depending on temperatures and the cultivation cycle.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, Desert CHOICE® Succulents is recommended, applied after watering and respecting the complete drying interval of the substrate. Before and during flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Flowering.
This is an inimitable xerophyte grown in Madrid in a technological square pot and with the substrate activated with mycorrhizal fungi.
