🌱 Morphology
Climbing cotyledon. A perennial succulent with a creeping, ascending, or climbing habit, exceptional within the genus. It develops thin, flexible stems that can lean on vegetation or rocks. The leaves are fleshy, flattened, and obovate to rounded in outline, ranging from green to yellowish-green or glaucous, generally with a reddish margin, especially when receiving intense lighting. The flowers are pendulous and red, characteristics that help distinguish it from closely related species such as C. woodii.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
Family Crassulaceae. It is a highly localized endemic of the Eastern Cape, South Africa, especially in the vicinity of Port Elizabeth. It inhabits dry, rocky environments, where its sprawling growth allows it to take advantage of crevices, rocks, and surrounding vegetation for support.
❄️ Temperature / USDA Zone: 9b–11b
It comes from a region with a relatively mild climate, although with significant thermal fluctuations. It can tolerate drops in temperature if kept completely dry, but it is recommended to protect it from persistent frosts and, above all, from the combination of cold and moisture in the roots.
☀️ Lighting
High lighting is recommended, with a target of 15–25 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ of DLI PAR. Good light intensity promotes compact growth, intensifies the reddish edge of the leaves, and helps maintain a firm structure. Progressive acclimatization should be carried out before exposing specimens grown in the shade to intense sun.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Summer dormancy. During periods of active growth, it is recommended to water abundantly and allow the substrate to dry completely before watering again. During the cold period, the frequency is significantly reduced, allowing the substrate to remain dry for longer. Rapid drainage is essential, especially due to the relatively thin nature of its stems.
🌸 Flowering
Produces pendulous, tubular, red flowers grouped in small inflorescences. Flowering can appear during the cold and mild months; under cultivation conditions in Spain, it can be concentrated approximately between winter and spring, depending on temperature and photoperiod.
🌿 Nutrition
During the growth period, Desert CHOICE® Succulents is recommended, avoiding excessively nitrogenous fertilization that could produce overly tender and elongated stems. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Flowering.
This is an inimitable xerophyte grown in Madrid in a technological square pot with the substrate activated with mycorrhizal fungi and biofungicides.
