🌱 Morphology: A low-growing succulent with short stems and very flat, dense, and extraordinarily geometric rosettes, which can reach about 30 cm in diameter. The leaves are fleshy, oblanceolate, emerald green with very defined creamy-white margins, forming a characteristic concentric pattern. It produces numerous offsets, so it can quickly form compact clumps. Fibrous roots.
🌍 Distribution and habitat: This is a horticultural cultivar, with no natural distribution. It was discovered in November 2011 in a commercial greenhouse in Vista, California, among mother plants of Aeonium ‘Party Platter’. It belongs to the family Crassulaceae. Although often marketed as variegated Aeonium tabuliforme, this identification is not supported by the patent: its correct name is Aeonium hybrid ‘Emerald Ice’.
❄️ Hardiness: USDA 9a–11b (approx. −6.7 to 10 °C as a climate reference). For potted cultivation, we recommend keeping it above 5 °C, especially if the substrate is wet. It can tolerate lower temperatures temporarily when dry, but the combination of cold and humidity greatly increases the risk of rot.
☀️ Lighting: Approximate target of 15–25 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ of DLI-PAR during growth. It needs a lot of light to maintain compact and well-defined variegation, but it should be protected from scorching midday sun during the hottest months and progressively acclimated.
💧 Cycle and watering: Like other Aeoniums, it primarily grows from autumn to spring and goes into dormancy or significant slowdown during summer, especially with high temperatures. During growth, water thoroughly and allow the substrate to dry completely before the next watering. In summer, greatly reduce frequency and avoid keeping the substrate moist.
🌸 Flowering: The flowering of ‘Emerald Ice’ is poorly documented and is not its main ornamental attraction. As an Aeonium, it can produce a branched inflorescence with small star-shaped flowers, usually yellow, towards late winter or spring. Rosettes that flower may die afterward, although abundant offset production allows the plant to continue forming clumps.
