🌱 Morphology: Aeonium of low growth, normally acaulescent or with a very short stem, forming a spectacular rosette up to 30–40 cm in diameter. Its leaves are extraordinarily large, fleshy, obovate, and generally flat, bright green, with finely ciliate margins; they can take on pink or reddish tones in cold, drought, or bright light. After flowering, the adult rosette dies, although it may have produced offsets.

🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family: The species A. canariense is endemic to the Canary Islands; the nominal subspecies A. canariense subsp. canariense is native to Tenerife. It grows on rocky outcrops, cliffs, and slopes, from relatively dry areas to laurel forest environments, approximately between 300 and 900 m, and belongs to the Crassulaceae family.

❄️ Cold hardiness: approximately USDA 9b–11b. For cultivation in Spain, we recommend keeping it above 5 °C, especially in a pot. It can tolerate temperatures close to 0 °C if it is completely dry and protected, but it is not advisable to expose it to frost.

☀️ Lighting: target approximately 15–25 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ of DLI (PAR) during growth. It appreciates intense light and can be grown in full sun after gradual acclimatization. During Madrid's very hot summers, it is preferable to protect it from the strongest midday sun.

💧 Cycle and watering: grows mainly during autumn, winter, and spring, with summer dormancy or slowed growth when temperatures rise significantly. During growth, water abundantly and let the substrate dry out completely before watering again. In summer, reduce watering frequency considerably, especially during heatwaves.

🌸 Flowering: produces a branched inflorescence approximately 25–30 cm long, with numerous small yellow flowers. Flowering occurs mainly between April and August. As with other monocarpic Aeonium species, the flowering rosette subsequently dies.

🌿 Nutrition: during the growing season, use Desert CHOICE at a moderate dose. Reduce or suspend fertilization during summer dormancy.
