🌱 Morphology: A low-growing Aeonium, usually stemless or with a very short stem, forming a spectacular rosette up to 30–40 cm in diameter. Its leaves are extraordinarily large, fleshy, obovate and generally flat, bright green, with a finely ciliated margin; they can acquire pinkish or reddish tones with cold, drought, or high light. After flowering, the adult rosette dies, although it may have produced offsets.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family: The species A. canariense is endemic to the Canary Islands; the nominal subspecies A. canariense subsp. canariense is native to Tenerife. It grows on rocks, cliffs, and slopes, from relatively dry areas to laurel forest environments, approximately between 300 and 900 m, and belongs to the family Crassulaceae.
❄️ Cold hardiness: approximately USDA 9b–11b. For cultivation in Spain, we recommend keeping it above 5 °C, especially in pots. It can tolerate temperatures close to 0 °C if completely dry and protected, but it is not advisable to expose it to frost.
☀️ Lighting: approximate target of 15–25 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ of DLI (PAR) during growth. It appreciates intense light and can be grown in full sun after progressive acclimatization. In Madrid's very hot summers, it is preferable to protect it from the strongest midday sun.
💧 Cycle and watering: growth mainly during autumn, winter, and spring, with slowing or summer dormancy when temperatures rise significantly. During growth, water abundantly and allow the substrate to dry completely before the next watering. In summer, greatly reduce frequency, especially during heatwaves.
🌸 Flowering: develops a branched inflorescence of approximately 25–30 cm, with numerous small yellow flowers. Flowering occurs mainly between April and August. As with monocarpic Aeoniums, the rosette that flowers subsequently dies.
🌿 Nutrition: during the growth period, use Desert CHOICE at a moderate dose. Reduce or suspend fertilization during summer dormancy.
