🌱 Morphology
Rib mutation... Monstrose form of Cleistocactus jujuyensis, characterized by irregular growth due to meristem alterations. The stems develop asymmetric bumps, incomplete ribs, and irregularly arranged areoles, potentially growing into twisted and intertwined columns that form sculptural clusters. The areoles may partially fuse and create very characteristic horizontal lines. Spination is sparse, consisting of small, fine, bristle-like spines. It is a form especially prized for the uniqueness of each specimen.
🌍 Distribution, habitat and family
The Cleistocactus jujuyensis species originates from northwestern Argentina, especially the provinces of Jujuy and Salta, and is also related to populations in Bolivia, in dry, rocky mountainous environments at approximately 1,800 to 2,800 m altitude. The monstrose form is of horticultural origin and does not constitute an independent wild entity. It belongs to the Cactaceae family, Cactoideae subfamily, Cereeae tribe. The reference name follows Joël Lodé's classification in Taxonomy of the Cactaceae, volumes III–VI, 2026. Cleistocactus strausii var. jujuyensis is a historical name.
❄️ Temperature · USDA Zone 8b–11b
Tolerates minimum temperatures down to −9 ºC in dry, well-acclimated specimens. During winter, it must be kept completely dry, especially when temperatures are low.
☀️ Lighting
Requires very intense lighting, from full sun to slight protection against the strongest sun in extremely hot climates. Good lighting promotes compact growth and a well-defined monstrose morphology. As a guideline during active growth, a PAR DLI of 20–30 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ is recommended.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter rest. During spring and summer, it is recommended to water abundantly, allowing the substrate to dry completely before watering again. In autumn, watering is progressively reduced until the plant is kept dry during winter. Rapid drainage is essential to prevent moisture accumulation around the irregular stems.
🌸 Flowering
It is a profusely flowering form. During summer, it can produce numerous tubular orange-red flowers, about 4 cm long, which appear laterally between the stems.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, a fertilizer with high assimilable calcium content and low nitrogen levels, such as Desert CHOICE® Cactáceas, is recommended, applied once a month when watering. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Floración.
