🌱 Morphology
A succulent, perennial, and caespitose Aizoaceae that forms clumps about 10 cm tall and 15–30 cm in diameter. It has narrow, fleshy, pointed, and keeled leaves that are grayish-green to whitish in color. The leaves that develop after flowering are narrower, remain erect, and appear partially wrapped by the dry sheaths of the previous leaves, giving the appearance that gave rise to the epithet cigarettifera.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
Endemic to South Africa, mainly from Namaqualand and the western part of the Cape province, where it grows on slopes and stony or slate terrain, at an altitude of approximately 300 to 900 m. It belongs to the Aizoaceae family.
❄️ Temperature
USDA Zone 9a–11. It tolerates minimum temperatures down to −7 ºC in dry conditions. Cold resistance decreases considerably with damp substrate.
☀️ Lighting
Requires high light levels. During active growth, it can be grown in full sun or very bright partial shade, ensuring high availability of PAR radiation, greater than 20 mol/m²/day DLI. In summer, it is advisable to protect it from the most intense sun and keep it cool.
🌸 Flowering
Produces solitary bright yellow flowers up to about 4 cm in diameter. Flowering occurs in the Southern Hemisphere spring, approximately between September and November, equivalent to March–May in Spain.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Summer dormancy. It is a succulent that grows mainly in autumn, winter, and spring, adapted to the winter rains of its area of origin. During growth, water abundantly, allowing the substrate to dry out completely; in summer, reduce water supply drastically and only water if it shows clear signs of dehydration.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, a fertilizer with a high content of assimilable calcium and potassium is recommended, such as Desert CHOICE® Aizoaceae, applied during watering and avoiding excessive nitrogen input.
