🌱 Morphology
T'noutsiama. Perennial, small, compact, and trailing succulent that forms clumps up to about 10 cm tall and 30 cm in diameter. It features several pairs of opposite, erect leaves that are partially fused at the base. They are very fleshy, triangular in cross-section, and blue-green to whitish-gray, with a finely papillose surface and a small tip at the end. Some plants display small teeth along the keel, a characteristic that gives the species its name.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
Endemic to northwestern South Africa, mainly Namaqualand and the Richtersveld, extending into southern Namibia. It grows on sandy plains and dry riverbeds, generally on materials derived from gneiss and granite, in a region with predominantly winter rainfall and hot, dry summers. It belongs to the Aizoaceae family.
❄️ Temperature
USDA Zone 9a–11. Tolerates minimum temperatures down to −7 ºC when kept dry. This is one of the most cold-hardy species in the genus, although the combination of low temperatures and damp substrate increases the risk of rot.
☀️ Lighting
Requires very high light levels to maintain its compact habit and the blue-gray coloration of the foliage. During active growth, it is recommended to reach over 20 mol/m²/day of DLI PAR, with direct sun or very intense light.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Summer dormancy. It enters dormancy in summer, and the older leaves dehydrate, forming a protective sheath around the new leaf pairs. Growth reactivates with autumn and winter rains. During the active period, it is recommended to water abundantly and allow the substrate to dry out completely before the next watering. In summer, it should be kept practically dry, with light misting possible if the plant shows excessive dehydration.
🌸 Flowering
Produces large flowers, up to about 8–10 cm in diameter, which open in the afternoon. The color is variable: yellow, white, orange, cream, and, occasionally, pink, reddish, or violet. It blooms mainly in winter.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, a fertilizer with a high content of assimilable calcium and potassium, such as Desert CHOICE® Aizoaceae, is recommended, applied during watering and avoiding excessive nitrogen input.
