🔍 Morphology
Small perennial succulent, compact and cespitose with age. The stems, initially very short, branch out progressively to form clumps. The leaves appear in opposite pairs; they are very fleshy, rigid, triangular in cross-section, and club-shaped, with a smooth surface and a grayish-green to brownish-green color. They can reach about 4 cm in length. The flowers, terminal and almost sessile, appear one to three per growth unit and reach about 3 cm in diameter.
📍 Distribution, habitat, and family
Endemic to South Africa, in the Western Cape, from Barrydale to Oudtshoorn, within the Little Karoo region. It grows on sandstone rocks, generally in dry and very well-drained environments, at an altitude between approximately 400 and 780 m. It belongs to the Aizoaceae family.
🌡️ USDA Zone and temperature
USDA 9a–11. It tolerates minimum temperatures of down to −7 ºC for short periods if kept completely dry. Cold accompanied by humidity significantly increases the risk of rot.
☀️ Lighting
It requires high light levels during its active period, preferably direct sun or very bright partial shade, with a target of over 20 moles of PAR photons/m²/day. During the summer, when it enters dormancy, it is advisable to keep it cool, dry, and protected from the most intense radiation.
🌸 Flowering
It produces pink flowers, up to about 3 cm in diameter. SANBI records flowering mainly in May in South Africa, which corresponds approximately to November in Spain.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Summer dormancy. Its growth is concentrated mainly during the cooler seasons. In autumn and spring, it can be watered abundantly, allowing the substrate to dry out completely before the next watering. During the summer, its activity significantly decreases, and it should be kept practically dry, providing water only if it shows obvious dehydration. Excess humidity can cause epidermal cracking and rot.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, a fertilizer with a high content of assimilable calcium and potassium is recommended, such as Desert CHOICE® Aizoáceas, applied during watering and avoiding excessive nitrogen input.
