🔍 Morphology
Small perennial succulent with fleshy roots and very short, branched stems, forming compact mats. The leaves appear in pairs fused at the base; they are fleshy, triangular in cross-section, lanceolate, yellowish-green to bluish-green, and feature small, soft teeth on the margins and towards the apex, which is one of its most distinctive characteristics. They can reach about 6 cm in length. In cultivation, it can spread up to about 40 cm.
📍 Distribution, habitat, and family
Endemic to South Africa, from Vondeling to Willowmore, in the transition zone between the Western and Eastern Cape. It grows on conglomerates and quartzitic sandstones, in small pockets of soil and also in rock crevices. It belongs to the Aizoaceae family.
🌡️ USDA zone and temperature
USDA 10a–11. It tolerates minimum temperatures down to −5 ºC during brief episodes if it remains completely dry. Moisture combined with low temperatures considerably increases the risk of rot.
☀️ Lighting
It requires high lighting. It tolerates everything from direct sun to bright partial shade, and during the summer, it appreciates protection from the most intense sun and excessive temperatures. A target of over 20 mol of PAR photons/m²/day during growth promotes a compact habit.
🌸 Flowering
It produces yellow flowers, solitary or gathered in small cymes, on pedicels that can reach 10 cm. The flowers measure approximately 4–5 cm in diameter and have numerous narrow petals. In South Africa, it blooms from late winter to early summer, approximately August-October; in Spain, this corresponds approximately to February-April.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Opportunistic. It does not have a rigid dormancy period: it can resume growth when water and suitable temperatures are available. During the active period, it is recommended to water abundantly and allow the substrate to dry out completely before the next watering. In very hot periods, it is advisable to reduce water and keep the plant cool and ventilated.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, a fertilizer with a high content of assimilable calcium and potassium, such as Desert CHOICE® Aizoaceae, is recommended, applied during watering and avoiding excessive nitrogen inputs.
