🌱 Morphology
Small succulent geophyte, practically stemless, developing a small underground tuber and 2–4 fleshy leaves at ground level. The leaves, about 1–3 cm long, are cylindrical and feature a truncated, translucent apex, resembling a small window. This transparency allows light to penetrate to the photosynthetic tissues located below the surface, while most of the plant remains protected from desiccation and herbivores.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
Species endemic to South Africa, distributed across the Western, Northern, and Eastern Cape provinces, from Namaqualand to Graaff-Reinet. It inhabits rocky slopes, crevices, and stony surfaces, on clay or sandy soils, between 125 and 1,395 m in altitude. It belongs to the Asphodelaceae family and is classified as Least Concern (LC).
❄️ Temperature
USDA Zone 9a–11b. Tolerates minimum temperatures down to −7 ºC under dry conditions, although actual resistance depends on the duration of the cold and the hydration status of the tuber. In cultivation, it is advisable to avoid prolonged frosts.
☀️ Lighting
Requires high light levels during the growing period. It can be grown in full sun or very bright partial shade, ensuring availability of more than 20 mol/m²/day of DLI PAR. Insufficient light encourages longer, less compact leaves.
🌸 Flowering
Produces small golden yellow flowers, grouped in an inflorescence that can reach about 20 cm in height. Flowering occurs in spring and early summer, mainly between September and November in the Southern Hemisphere, roughly equivalent to March–May in Spain.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Summer dormancy. It is a geophyte with primarily autumn-winter and spring growth. After the first rains, it begins to develop leaves and remains active until flowering. During growth, provide abundant watering, allowing the substrate to dry out completely before the next application. With the arrival of heat, it enters dormancy and the leaves retract: during this period, watering should be drastically reduced, and it may be kept practically dry. Excess moisture is especially dangerous due to its sensitivity to rot.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, a fertilizer specific to plants in the aloe and related groups is recommended, such as Desert CHOICE® Aloes, Haworthias & Co., applied during watering and avoiding excessive nitrogen input.
