🌱 Morphology
Small, slow-growing cactus, usually solitary at first, though it can form clusters with age. The body is globose, depressed or shortly cylindrical, dark green, about 2–4 cm in diameter and up to 6 cm tall, developed over a thickened taproot. It features 9–15 very low ribs, barely divided into small tubercles. The areoles produce 2–11 white, brown, or grayish radial spines, about 2–6 mm long, arranged laterally and appressed to the body. The rosalbiflora form is especially notable for its white or pinkish-white flowers, in contrast to the great chromatic variability existing in the A. pygmaea complex.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
The species is distributed throughout Bolivia and northwestern Argentina, in mountainous Andean environments. It grows among rocks and crevices, generally in high-altitude locations, where temperatures can be very low during the winter. Rebutia rosalbiflora was described by Friedrich Ritter and is currently considered included in Aylostera pygmaea.
Family Cactaceae · Subfamily Cactoideae · Tribe Cereeae · Genus Aylostera · Species Aylostera pygmaea f. rosalbiflora.
❄️ Temperature · USDA Zone 8a
It tolerates minimum temperatures of down to −12 ºC, for short periods and with the substrate completely dry. Its mountainous origin provides it with excellent resistance to dry cold.
☀️ Lighting
A very bright exposure is recommended, with soft direct sun or bright partial shade. High light availability, around 20–30 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ of DLI PAR, promotes a compact habit and abundant flowering. In summer, it may appreciate some protection during hours of maximum radiation.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter dormancy. During active growth, it is recommended to water abundantly and let the substrate dry completely before the next watering. In autumn, water is progressively reduced until the plant is kept dry during the winter. The thickened root requires excellent drainage and special caution against excess humidity.
🌸 Flowering
The most attractive feature of this form is its white, pinkish-white, or very soft pink flowers, of considerable size in relation to the small body. They appear in spring, mainly between March and June, forming a crown around the apex. Flowering has been documented from approximately 3–4 years of age and it can produce several flowers during the same season.
🌿 Nutrition
During active growth, it is recommended to use Desert CHOICE® Cactáceas NPK (Ca-Mg) 4-4-7 (4-4) once a month along with watering. Assimilable calcium promotes the formation of firm tissues and the maintenance of turgidity, while magnesium participates in chlorophyll synthesis. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Floración.
