🌱 Morphology
Small, slow-growing caudiciform succulent, prized for its thin, cylindrical and branched stems, covered with tiny white to silvery membranous scales. These structures are stipules that almost completely conceal the small green leaves, creating the appearance of fine branches coated in shiny paper. The stems can grow spreading or slightly upright from a thickened, partially buried base, forming small clumps over time. Its delicate silhouette and silvery hue make it a particularly attractive species for miniature succulent collections.
🌍 Origin and family
Family Anacampserotaceae, order Caryophyllales, genus Avonia. It is marketed under the name Avonia namaquensisand is associated with the arid regions of Namibia and South Africa, in the Namaqualand and Richtersveld environments. The genus is adapted to stony soils and environments with seasonal rainfall. The whitish stipules help reflect solar radiation and reduce water loss.
❄️ Temperature — USDA 10a
Tolerates minimum temperatures close to −1 °C only for short periods and when the substrate is dry. It is recommended to protect it from prolonged frosts and keep it sheltered during cold, wet spells, especially when grown in a small pot.
☀️ Lighting
Bright light–soft sun. Abundant light promotes compact growth and allows the silvery tone of the stipules to be appreciated. A DLI of 15–25 mol/m²/day is recommended, with gradual acclimatization to direct sunlight. During the hottest part of summer, it is advisable to prevent the pot from overheating and provide protection during the middle of the day.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Summer dormancy. During periods of intense heat, watering is considerably reduced, especially if the plant stops growing. During the active phase, water moderately and allow the substrate to dry out completely before watering again. It is essential to use a very well-draining substrate and avoid persistent moisture around the neck and roots.
🌸 Flowering
The flowers are small and appear at the ends of the stems. In avonias of this group, they can range in color from creamy white to pink or carmine, depending on the species and the identification of the specimen. Flowering is discreet compared to the ornamental appeal of the silvery stems.
🌿 Nutrition
During active growth, Desert CHOICE® Succulents is recommended, with special attention to the supply of bioavailable potassium and calcium. Apply with watering, following the indicated dosage and reducing or suspending fertilization during summer dormancy.
