🌱 Morphology
Solitary cactus, although it can occasionally form multiple stems from the base. The body is globose to cylindrical, olive green and densely covered with tiny white trichomes that give it a grayish or velvety appearance. It generally presents 5 ribs, although specimens with 4–7 may appear, which are straight and well-defined, with small tubercles along their margins. The areoles are rounded, slightly woolly, and lack true spines or have very small ones. It can reach approximately 20 cm in diameter and, with age, exceed 30 cm in height.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
Endemic to northeastern Mexico, mainly southwestern Coahuila, with documented presence also in nearby areas of Durango. It inhabits hills and rocky limestone slopes in arid and seasonally dry environments, among xerophilous scrubland and on gravel and calcareous sandy soils. It is found at altitudes between approximately 1,000 and 1,400 meters. It belongs to the Cactaceae family.
❄️ Temperature — USDA Zone 9a–11b
It tolerates minimum temperatures of down to −7 ºC if kept completely dry and properly acclimatized. During winter, it is recommended to keep it dormant and with dry substrate.
☀️ Lighting
It requires very intense lighting during active growth and tolerates several hours of direct sun once acclimatized. An approximate target of 18–25 mol/m²/day of DLI PAR promotes compact growth and allows for the development of good white trichome coverage.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Winter dormancy. Its growth is mainly concentrated from spring to early autumn. During the active period, it is recommended to water abundantly and allow the substrate to dry completely before the next watering. In winter, it should be kept practically dry, especially when temperatures are low. Rapid drainage is essential to prevent moisture accumulation around the roots.
🌸 Flowering
It produces large flowers, pale yellow to intense yellow in color, generally with a characteristic orange or reddish throat, which appear in the apical area. Flowering can occur during spring and summer; in Madrid, it is expected mainly between May and July.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, a fertilizer with a high content of assimilable calcium and low nitrogen levels is recommended, such as Desert CHOICE® Cactaceae, applied once a month during watering. Before flowering, it can be supplemented with Desert CHOICE® Flowering.
This is an inimitable xerophyte grown in Madrid in a technological square pot, with the substrate activated with mycorrhizal fungi and biofungicides.
📏 Gourmet xerophyte in an 8x8 cm pot.
