🔍 Morphology
A very rare, small succulent with a stony appearance, generally solitary or forming small clusters. It presents a pair of opposite, very fleshy, compressed, and ovoid leaves, with a marked keel and an apical cleft. New leaves develop in the center while the old pairs remain around the base, progressively changing from green to yellowish and finally to dark. The leaves can reach approximately 2.5–3.5 cm in length.
📍 Distribution, habitat, and family
Endemic to the Knersvlakte, in the Western Cape province, South Africa. It lives on the characteristic quartz plains of the Knersvlakte Quartz Vygieveld, in the Succulent Karoo, where it remains partially camouflaged among quartz fragments. It belongs to the Aizoaceae family. SANBI classifies it as a rare species with a very restricted distribution.
🌡️ USDA zone and temperature
USDA 9a–11. It tolerates minimum temperatures down to −5 ºC when kept completely dry. Cold hardiness also depends on the duration of the cold spell, acclimatization, and, especially, keeping the roots dry.
☀️ Lighting
It requires very high light intensity during growth, preferably direct sun or very bright partial shade, with a target of over 20 mol of PAR photons/m²/day. High radiation promotes compact growth and proper leaf formation.
🌸 Flowering
It produces a solitary, almost sessile flower, about 2.5–3.5 cm in diameter. The color varies between populations and can be deep magenta, pink, white, or yellow, although magenta shades predominate. In the southern hemisphere, it blooms mainly between May and August, corresponding approximately to November-February in Spain.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Summer dormancy. Its growth is linked to the winter rains of the Knersvlakte. Activity begins with the drop in temperatures and the first rains, with new leaves and flowers developing during the cool season. During the active period, abundant watering is recommended, allowing the substrate to dry out completely before watering again. In summer, it should be kept practically dry, especially avoiding the combination of heat and humidity.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, a fertilizer with high content of assimilable calcium and potassium, such as Desert CHOICE® Aizoáceas, is recommended, applied during irrigation while avoiding excessive nitrogen supply.
