🔍 Morphology
Small shrubby succulent that forms compact cushions, with stems branched from the base and very short internodes. It presents dimorphic leaves: those of the dormant period are shorter and enveloping, while the growth leaves are large, opposite, fused at the base, triangular in section, slightly keeled, mucronate, and silvery grayish-green in color, with a papillose surface. The leaves can reach 4–8 cm, exceptionally up to 12 cm.
📍 Distribution, habitat and family
Endemic to South Africa, from Hondeklipbaai, in the Northern Cape, to the Clanwilliam area and the mouth of the Olifants River, in the Western Cape. It grows in the Succulent Karoo and other dry scrublands, on sandy or stony soils and rock outcrops, especially those associated with quartz. It belongs to the Aizoaceae family.
🌡️ USDA zone and temperature
USDA 9a–11. It tolerates minimum temperatures down to −5 ºC when the substrate remains completely dry. In cultivation, cold humidity significantly increases the risk of rot.
☀️ Lighting
During growth, it needs very high lighting, preferably direct sun or very bright partial shade, with a target above 20 moles of PAR photons/m²/day. During the summer, when it enters dormancy, it is advisable to protect it from the most intense sun and keep it cool and ventilated.
🌸 Flowering
It produces solitary flowers, large in relation to the size of the plant, up to about 5.4 cm in diameter, generally magenta or white, during June and July in South Africa, roughly equivalent to December-January in Spain.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Summer dormancy. It is a winter-growing species: it begins to activate in autumn, develops most of its growth from late winter to spring, and progressively enters dormancy during the summer. It is recommended to water when the substrate is completely dry during the active period and to reduce watering significantly in summer, providing water only if it begins to show clear signs of dehydration. Excess water can cause epidermis ruptures and root rot.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, a fertilizer with a high content of assimilable calcium and potassium is recommended, such as Desert CHOICE® Aizoáceas, applied during watering and avoiding excessive nitrogen inputs.
