🔍 Morphology:
Great specimen. Small succulent Aizoaceae, compact growth, forming clusters of rosettes. It features 2–3 pairs of leaves per branch, with very fleshy, triangular leaves almost as thick as they are wide, measuring approximately 16–18 × 10–11 mm. The surface is covered in small whitish tubercles or warts, resembling pearls, which give it its characteristic texture. It possesses a root or thickened root tuber, adapted for water storage.
📍 Distribution, habitat and family:
It is a species native to the Cape provinces of South Africa, included in the flora of the arid regions of the Western Cape. It grows in dry and stony environments. It belongs to the Aizoaceae family. Aloinopsis luckhoffii is currently the accepted name by Plants of the World Online (Kew); among its synonyms are Titanopsis luckhoffii, Aloinopsis setifera and Aloinopsis villetii.
🌡️ USDA ZONE 8a. It tolerates minimum temperatures of down to −12 ºC when completely dry and well acclimatized. Horticultural references place the species in USDA 8a, although actual resistance depends on the substrate moisture, the duration of the frost, and the condition of the plant. During the lowest temperatures, the substrate must be kept dry.
☀️ Lighting: It requires plenty of light to maintain compact growth and correctly develop flowers. It can be grown in full sun during periods of moderate temperatures, avoiding excess radiation combined with very high summer temperatures. As a cultivation goal, an accumulated radiation greater than 20 moles of PAR photons daily favors compact growth and good flowering.
🌸 Flowering: It produces solitary flowers, daisy-like in appearance and relatively large compared to the size of the plant, approximately 2.5–3 cm in diameter. The color is variable: it can be golden yellow, bronze yellow, or salmon pink, so the species should not be identified by a single floral color. Flowering usually occurs towards the end of winter, and the flowers may not open completely when lighting is insufficient.
💧 Growth cycle and watering: Summer dormancy. It is an Aizoaceae adapted to arid conditions with activity mainly during the cooler periods. Watering should be concentrated when the plant is active, providing water abundantly and allowing the substrate to dry completely before watering again. During the summer, high temperatures can reduce its activity and water supply should be significantly reduced, especially avoiding the combination of heat and moist substrate. As temperatures drop, activity is recovered and watering can be resumed progressively. A rigid schedule should not be kept: the plant's growth status and the temperature should determine the frequency of watering.
🚀 Nutrition: During the active growth period, a fertilizer with high content of assimilable calcium and potassium is recommended, such as Desert CHOICE® Aizoáceas, applied during growth watering and avoiding excess nitrogen.
