🔍 Morphology: Dwarf succulent Aizoaceae, compact and caespitose in growth. It forms small rosettes atop a thick, truncated root tuber, which can reach up to about 20 cm in length. Each branch presents 2 or 3 pairs of leaves. The leaves are erect, spatulate, fleshy, approximately 3 cm long and up to 1.7 cm wide, with a thickened, triangular apex. The surface features prominent warts and a coloration that can acquire brownish-gray tones.
📍 Distribution, habitat and family: It is a species endemic to South Africa, with a known distribution in the Laingsburg region, Western Cape province, especially in the vicinity of Matjiesfontein. It inhabits gray, flat, and stony areas located at the edge of the winter rainfall region, between approximately 700 and 1000 m altitude. It belongs to the Aizoaceae family.
🌡️ USDA ZONE 8b. It tolerates minimum temperatures down to −9 ºC when completely dry and well-acclimated. Due to its tuberous root, the combination of low temperatures and moist substrate should be especially avoided during cold spells.
☀️ Lighting: It needs plenty of light to maintain compact growth and encourage flowering. During the cool season, it can receive direct sun, provided temperatures are moderate. In summer, when the temperature rises and it enters dormancy, it is advisable to protect it from the most intense solar radiation. As a cultivation reference, it is recommended to maintain PAR radiation greater than 20 moles of photons per day during the active period.
🌸 Flowering: It produces 1–3 flowers above the rosette. The petals are intense yellow, without the reddish bands characteristic of other Aloinopsis species. In the Northern Hemisphere, flowering can occur during late winter and early spring; in its habitat, flowering has been recorded in September, coinciding with the end of winter and the beginning of the austral spring.
💧 Growth cycle and watering: Summer dormancy. It is a species adapted to a winter rainfall regime and its growth is concentrated during the cooler months. Watering should be done during the active period, abundantly, and allowing the substrate to dry completely before watering again. As temperatures rise in late spring and during summer, the plant reduces its activity and enters dormancy; during this period, watering should be greatly reduced or suspended if temperatures are high. With the drop in temperatures at the end of summer, activity is progressively resumed and watering can be restored.
🚀 Nutrition: During the active growth period, a fertilizer with a high content of assimilable calcium and potassium, such as Desert CHOICE® Aizoaceae, is recommended, applied during watering and avoiding excessive nitrogen inputs.
