🌱 Morphology
Shrubby succulent, branched and prostrate or climbing, which can reach about 2 m. Its stems show very characteristic light and dark green longitudinal bands. The leaves, narrow, shiny and strongly recurved, grow along the stems; they are dark green and have small white teeth on the margins. It forms large clumps with numerous stems.
🌍 Distribution, habitat and family
Native to the mountains of the Eastern Cape, extending to the Free State and Lesotho. It lives among rocks, especially on peaks and high-altitude slopes, even within the belt where winter snows occur. It belongs to Asphodelaceae. It is currently included in Aloiampelos, a genus separated from Aloe after phylogenetic studies.
❄️ Temperature
USDA 8b–11b. It is one of the most cold-hardy alooids and can withstand frost and even snow if the substrate remains very well-drained. In a pot in Madrid, I recommend keeping it above -3 °C, especially protecting the roots from wet cold. But in our Botanical Garden it withstood -12°C.
☀️ Lighting
Full sun. During active growth, target 20–30 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ DLI PAR. Intense lighting keeps the stems compact and promotes flowering.
💧 Growth cycle
Opportunistic, although its growth slows significantly with winter cold. It tolerates dry periods, but responds vigorously to water and favorable temperatures. Water abundantly and let the substrate dry completely before the next watering.
🌸 Flowering
Dense, cylindrical or conical racemes, up to about 40 cm, with generally yellow to orange-yellow flowers, although forms with a more orange hue exist. In Madrid it flowers mainly between April-June.
🌿 Nutrition
During growth, use Desert CHOICE® Aloes, Haworthia & Co., rich in calcium and potassium, following moderate fertilization. Reduce or suspend during cold periods or slow growth.
This is an inimitable xerophyte cultivated in Madrid in a square technological pot and with the substrate activated with mycorrhizal fungi and biofungicides.
