🌱 Morphology: A compact, relatively slow-growing hybrid that forms rosettes up to 30 cm in diameter and height. Its leaves are fleshy, lanceolate, and narrow towards the apex, dark green, with dark red protuberances and small soft spines along the center and margins, as well as small light spots. With plenty of light, they acquire intense reddish and bronzed tones. It produces numerous offshoots and can form small clumps.
🌍 Distribution, Habitat, and Family: This is a horticultural hybrid created by Kelly Griffin in California, so it has no natural distribution or habitat of its own. It is a multi-generational hybrid; the involvement of 'Doran Black' has been suggested, but its complete genealogy is not documented with sufficient precision. It belongs to the family Asphodelaceae.
❄️ Temperature: Approximately USDA 9a–11b. For safe cultivation in Spain, it is recommended to keep it above 5 °C, especially in pots. It can tolerate temperatures near 0 °C in dry, protected conditions, but the combination of cold and humidity should be avoided.
☀️ Lighting: Approximate target of 20–30 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ DLI of PAR during growth. It tolerates and benefits from direct sun after progressive acclimatization. Intense lighting is essential to achieve its characteristic red and bronzed tones. In Madrid, protect from the most extreme sun during heat waves.
💧 Growth Cycle: Opportunistic, although it grows particularly well during temperate periods. During the active period, water abundantly and allow the substrate to dry completely before the next watering. Significantly reduce watering during cold winter and extreme heat episodes.
🌸 Flowering: It can flower once or twice a year, producing slender floral stalks with reddish-pink tubular flowers, which some sources describe as orange. In cultivation, it can flower mainly in autumn and winter, although the timing may vary depending on conditions.
🌿 Nutrition: During active growth, use Desert CHOICE® Aloes, Haworthia & Co., specifically formulated for these plants and with a particularly important contribution of calcium and potassium. Reduce or suspend fertilization during periods of slowed growth.
