🌱 Morphology
A dwarf hybrid that forms compact rosettes of about 10–15 cm in diameter and height, producing numerous offsets and forming clumps over time. The leaves are triangular, fleshy, and grayish-green, usually covered with small white spots. The margins have very small and delicate teeth, which turn intense pink, red, or orange-red. With abundant light, both the edges and part of the leaves can significantly intensify their coloration. Its habit can be slightly creeping with age.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
Asphodelaceae. It is a horticultural hybrid of American origin, so it does not have its own natural distribution or habitat. It was developed by Kelly Griffin during his time at Rancho Soledad Nurseries, California. The name ‘Donnie’ is used as a commercial synonym.
❄️ Temperature
USDA 9b–11b. It is marketed with an approximate tolerance of up to –6 °C in dry conditions, but for pot cultivation, we recommend keeping it above 5 °C, especially if there is moisture in the substrate.
☀️ Lighting
From bright light to full sun, always with progressive acclimatization. Target during growth: 20–30 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ DLI PAR. Intense light promotes the pink-red coloration of the margins. In Madrid, it should be protected from the most extreme summer afternoon sun if sunburn appears.
💧 Growth cycle
Opportunistic, capable of growing for much of the year when moderate temperatures are available. In summer, it may slow down with extreme heat. Water abundantly and let the substrate dry completely before the next watering. In winter, considerably space out waterings if the temperature drops.
🌸 Flowering
It produces relatively tall flower spikes for the small size of the rosette, with tubular flowers generally orange to orange-red. It can flower from spring to summer, approximately between April and July in Madrid, although the date may vary depending on cultivation conditions.
🌿 Nutrition
During growth, use Desert CHOICE® Aloes, Haworthia & Co., with calcium and potassium supplementation. Reduce or suspend fertilization during periods of slow growth.
