🌱 Morphology
Small acaulescent succulent that forms compact rosettes about 10–15 cm in diameter, producing numerous offsets and forming dense clumps. The leaves are triangular, lanceolate, and fleshy, dark green, with numerous white tubercles on both surfaces and small white teeth on the margins. The apices end in a characteristic white bristle or arista, from which the name aristata is derived. The leaves may acquire reddish tones with cold, drought, or high light.
🌍 Distribution, habitat and family
Asphodelaceae. It is native to South Africa, Lesotho, and Eswatini, especially the Cape, Free State, and KwaZulu-Natal provinces. It grows among rocks, on slopes and mountain grasslands, from relatively low areas up to approximately 2,000 m in altitude. It is adapted to environments with seasonal rainfall and cold episodes.
❄️ Temperature
USDA 7b–11b. It is one of the old small "Aloes" with the highest cold tolerance. Dry and well-established specimens can withstand several degrees below zero. In Desert City, they endured -12°C.
☀️ Lighting
It needs plenty of light and tolerates direct sun after progressive acclimatization. Target during growth: 20–30 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ DLI PAR. High light promotes rosette compactness, well-defined tubercle formation, and reddish hues. In Madrid, it may appreciate some protection from extreme sun during July and August afternoons.
💧 Growth cycle
Opportunistic, adapted to seasonal rainfall and capable of taking advantage of favorable periods of temperature and humidity. In warmer months, it may slow down if the heat is extreme. Water abundantly and allow the substrate to dry completely before the next watering. In winter, reduce watering according to temperature and light.
🌸 Flowering
It produces an erect inflorescence, usually simple or sparsely branched, about 20–30 cm, with tubular orange or reddish-orange flowers, which contrast with the greenish bracts. In cultivation, it usually flowers mainly from late spring to summer, approximately between May and July in Madrid, although this may vary depending on conditions.
🌿 Nutrition
During growth, use Desert CHOICE® Aloes, Haworthia & Co., with calcium and potassium. Reduce or suspend fertilization during periods of slow growth.
