🌱 Morphology
It is one of those bulbous plants that surprise you with the contrast between what is visible and what remains hidden. Underground, it stores a huge bulb covered in thick tunics, while, when it is time to bloom, an extraordinarily tall stalk emerges that can exceed 2 meters and is covered with hundreds of small white flowers. It seems impossible that a plant of such a discreet appearance could produce a bloom of such magnitude.
It is a robust bulb ous geophyte, with a spherical bulb approximately 7–15 cm in diameter, partially emerging and protected by tough, brown outer tunics. The leaves are lanceolate, fleshy, about 20–50 cm long, and may appear after flowering. The inflorescence rises on an erect scape that can reach about 2 m and form a raceme up to 80 cm long with several hundred flowers. The flowers are white or greenish-white, with a green, purple, or brown band on the outer face of the tepals.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
It belongs to the Asparagaceae family, subfamily Scilloideae. It is a species widely distributed throughout tropical and southern Africa, from Senegal and East Africa to South Africa, including Botswana, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Malawi, and Mozambique. It grows mainly in grasslands, savannas, scrublands, and open forests, on both sandy or clay soils and rocky terrain, from low-lying areas up to approximately 1,800 m in altitude.
❄️ Temperature — USDA Zone 9a–11b
It tolerates minimum temperatures of up to −6.7 ºC in dry, well-acclimated specimens during brief exposures. During dormancy, the bulb protected under the substrate withstands cold better than the aerial part. It is especially important to avoid keeping the substrate moist during cold spells.
☀️ Lighting
It needs plenty of light to develop correctly and bloom. It can be grown in full sun, although it also tolerates partial shade. Intense lighting promotes a more robust plant and abundant flowering.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Seasonal growth and rest during the unfavorable period. Flowering usually occurs towards the end of the dry season and can appear before the leaves. During the active period, it is recommended to water abundantly and let the substrate dry out completely before the next watering. When it enters dormancy, it should be kept almost completely dry, as excess moisture can lead to the loss and rotting of the bulb.
🌸 Flowering
It is its grand spectacle. The flower stalk can reach about 2 meters and bear hundreds of small, slightly greenish, and fragrant white flowers that form a long floral column. In its habitat, it blooms at the end of the dry season and may do so before the leaves appear.
🌿 Nutrition
During the active growth period, a specific fertilizer for succulents with a high content of assimilable calcium, such as Desert CHOICE® Succulents, is recommended, applied once a month when watering.
