🌱 Morphology
Very rare... A very slow-growing, compact, and extraordinarily ornamental agave that forms an almost spherical rosette approximately 25–40 cm tall and 35–50 cm in diameter. The leaves are rigid, thick, and triangular, dark green in color, with the characteristic white lines of Agave victoriae-reginae transformed in this cultivar into a spectacular, wide, and continuous ivory-white margin. The leaves are practically devoid of marginal teeth and end in a short, whitish spine of about 1.5–2 cm. The contrast between the deep green of the center and the pure white of the margins increases with intense lighting. It produces few offsets and its growth is considerably slower than that of the type species.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
‘White Rhino’ is a variegated cultivar of Agave victoriae-reginae, and therefore does not have a natural distribution of its own. The species of origin is endemic to northeastern Mexico, mainly from eastern Coahuila to western Nuevo León, where it grows in deserts and dry scrublands.
Family Asparagaceae · Subfamily Agavoideae · Tribe Agaveae
❄️ Temperature · USDA Zone 9a
It tolerates minimum temperatures of down to −7 ºC for short periods and with the substrate completely dry. For this variegated cultivar, it is especially important to protect it from the combination of cold, humidity, and poor ventilation. Some sources place its limit around −4 ºC, while others record −7 to −9 ºC when dry; therefore, the most restrictive value is adopted here for cultivation in Spain.
☀️ Lighting
It requires plenty of light and soft direct sun, which are essential to maintain the compact rosette and the spectacular white margin. In climates with very intense summers, it may appreciate light shade during the central hours, as the white tissue of the variegation is more susceptible to sunburn. A PAR radiation of 20–30 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ (DLI) is recommended.
💧 Growth cycle and watering
Growth mainly during spring and summer. During the active period, it is recommended to water abundantly and allow the substrate to dry out completely before the next watering. In autumn, the supply is progressively reduced until it is kept practically dry during the winter. Persistent humidity around the rosette should be avoided, especially.
🌸 Flowering
It is monocarpic: the rosette flowers only once upon reaching maturity and subsequently dies. Flowering requires many years; for A. victoriae-reginae, a first flowering has been documented around 30 years, while for ‘White Rhino’, approximately 15–30 years are managed in cultivation. The inflorescence is a large erect stalk, several meters tall, with numerous clustered flowers in yellow, cream to reddish-purplish hues, depending on the source and the specimen.
🌿 Nutrition
During active growth, Desert CHOICE® Succulents is recommended, especially for its supply of potassium and assimilable calcium. Potassium promotes water regulation and tissue resistance against stress, while assimilable calcium helps maintain firm leaves and a structurally resistant rosette. It is not recommended to routinely add a specific flowering fertilizer to agaves.
