🌱 Morphology
A relatively fast-growing agave for the genus, forming a large rosette approximately 1.2–1.8 m tall. The leaves are lanceolate, fleshy, rigid, and acuminate, 90–120 cm long, generally blue-green to grayish-green, with straight or wavy margins. They feature small, regularly spaced brown teeth, about 3–6 mm, and a strong terminal spine. The short, thick stem forms, with the leaf bases, the characteristic "piña" or head, which constitutes the plant's sugar reserve.
🌍 Distribution, habitat, and family
Its natural range is located in western and central Mexico, although its natural delimitation is difficult to establish due to its ancient selection and cultivation. It is especially associated with Jalisco, as well as Oaxaca and Puebla, and is currently widely cultivated in Jalisco, Guanajuato, Michoacán, Nayarit, and Tamaulipas. It grows in dry or semi-arid environments, frequently at altitudes between approximately 1,000 and 2,000 m, with abundant sunshine and well-drained soils.
Family Asparagaceae · Subfamily Agavoideae · Tribe Agaveae
❄️ Temperature · USDA Zone 9b
It tolerates minimum temperatures down to −3 ºC for brief periods and with the substrate completely dry. It comes from regions where hard frosts are unusual, making it significantly more sensitive to cold than other mountain agaves.
☀️ Lighting
It requires direct sun and abundant light throughout the year. Intense exposure favors the compact development of the rosette and the characteristic bluish hue of the leaves. A PAR radiation of 20–30 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ (DLI) is recommended.
💧 Growth cycle and irrigation
Growth mainly in spring and summer. During the active period, it is recommended to water abundantly and allow the substrate to dry out completely before watering again. In autumn, waterings are gradually reduced, and during winter, it is kept practically dry, especially when temperatures drop.
🌸 Flowering
It is a monocarpic species: after several years of growth, it produces a huge inflorescence and the rosette dies after flowering. In cultivation, it can reach maturity in approximately 6 to 11 years, depending on environmental conditions; in commercial plantations, the floral stalk is usually removed so the plant concentrates its reserves in the "piña."
The stalk can reach about 5 m in height and produces numerous yellow flowers.
🌿 Nutrition
During active growth, Desert CHOICE® Succulents is recommended, especially for its contribution of potassium and assimilable calcium. Potassium promotes water regulation and tissue resistance to stress, while assimilable calcium helps maintain firm leaves and a structurally resistant rosette. Adding a specific flowering fertilizer routinely is not recommended for agaves.
