Agave isthmensis ‘Kabutogani’ f. variegata |Variegated agave Kabutonagi
€53,00
🌿 Morphology: Small Agave with a very compact and symmetrical rosette, usually about 20–35 cm. Its leaves are fleshy, short, and spatulate, bluish-green or glaucous, with creamy-yellow variegation on the margins. It has reddish or brown marginal teeth, which in ‘Kabutogani’ can fuse to form the characteristic continuous spination (連棘). The rosette is acaulescent and can produce offsets, although this cultivar may be slower to produce them.
🌍 Origin and habitat: Family Asparagaceae, subfamily Agavoideae. Agave isthmensis is native to Oaxaca and Chiapas (Mexico), especially the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. It grows on limestone slopes and cliffs, approximately between 15 and 875 m according to available records, in a seasonally dry tropical climate. The variegated ‘Kabutogani’ form is a horticultural cultivar, not a wild population.
🌡️ Temperature: Approximately USDA 9b–11 for the species. It is a warm-climate Agave and should not be considered particularly cold-hardy. For the variegated cultivar, we recommend keeping it above 5 °C, and preferably above 8 °C for extended periods. Near 0 °C, it should only remain completely dry and protected.
☀️ Light: During active growth, we recommend an approximate DLI of 25–35 mol·m⁻²·day⁻¹ of PAR. The species comes from very bright limestone walls and needs a lot of light to maintain a compact rosette. For the variegated form, it is advisable to gradually acclimate it to intense sun and avoid excessive radiation and heat during the middle of the day if burns appear on the yellow areas.
💧 Watering and dormancy: It is primarily summer growing. During spring-summer, water generously and allow the substrate to dry completely before the next watering. In autumn, gradually reduce watering and during winter, space waterings widely, keeping it practically dry at low temperatures.
🌸 Flowering: It is monocarpic, like other Agave. The species produces a terminal inflorescence with yellowish flowers, but in cultivation, flowering is infrequent due to its relatively slow growth. The rosette dies after flowering.
🧪 Nutrition: During spring and summer, fertilize with Desert CHOICE Succulents at a moderate and regular dose. In a variegated plant, it is advisable to avoid excessive nitrogen, which can lead to overly soft and open growth. Reduce fertilization at the end of summer and suspend it during winter.
